I've just read 2 of the David Walliams books to my 8 year old son (Billionaire Boy and The Boy in the Dress). Both very funny, although I think my son was a bit young to get some of the jokes and I did skip a bit that I thought wasn't suitable. Luckily he didn't realise!!!
  • i'd suggest michael murpungo, enid blyton, dianne wynne jones, roald dahl, phillip pullman, Harry Potter stories, JM Barries Peter PAn and theres a more recent one called Peter Pan in Scarlett.

What about an audio book if you are not sure about the childs reading ability? would be good for in the car on long trips perhaps?

or what about the Horrible History series if you fancy something non-fiction biased?

Judy Blume was another favourite, but some would be a bit old for a 9 year old - there's one about a girl getting her period, and one about a first relationship (Forever) - definitely not suitable for a 9 year old, especially page 72.

Forever is the only unsuitable one. I didnt get to read it til I was about 13.

Are you There God its Me Margaret is the period one - I would hardly say thats unsuitable though seeing as some girls get their periods at around 10! I read that in year 5 or yr 6 and it was one of my most favourite books I think I read it about 4 times.

I was addicted to Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series long before Harry Potter came along. Also Enid Blyton and the Swallows and Amazons series, but that one might be a struggle because they're very dry unless you're interested in the technical details of how to sail a boat :D

If she likes Doctor Whom I definitely rec the Doctor Who books! They're a fun read (but you might want to avoid 10/Rose because those ones were drivel compared to earlier and later novels)
'til the end of the line

I read Forever in year 7 and wrote a review for the school paper, quoting some juicy bits. It was given back to me to redo :rotfl:

I got my period at 10, so I agree that for some girls it would be ok, but if it's a young 9 year old then she might not want to think about it all. I think it's down to the girl really. And I found it confusing when I read it at age 12ish because it was quite old fashioned - I couldn't understand what she was talking about with a belt and fastening pads on to it.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
