This story is also covered by the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7654254.stm where the couple admit to cutting cans in half to get additional points. As someone said above - a few spoiling it for the rest of us.

Point taken, but "the rest of us" are really just the chosen few who live near a machine.
Nobody in Wales, Scotland or N Ireland as well as large areas of England are able to access this scheme.

They were piloted first in just a few stores - now in 20 or so. Tesco are being leaned on heavily by the goverment as they are one of the biggest suppliers of carrier bags in the UK (along with all the other supermarkets). Therefore they have green targets to meet, so if they can show they are making the effort it takes the pressure off them a little.

So in conclusion I think these will eventually come to all stores, you just have to be patient. However, with them being so simply abused, I think they will have to tighten up their design or there will be hemeraging points.

According to Wikipedia there are over 2000 Tesco stores, so 1% offer this facility presently. I think the majority of the country is going to have to be patient for a very long time.

  • I recycle loads so to get tesco points would help. Where can I find my local machine, as I tried looking on tesco site. I live in Soilhull/birmingham.
  • Well done to them!

Who wouldn't try and earn a few more points this way. Helps the enviroment and helps them.

Wonder if they are actually a member of this site!

We are actually members, and have been for years (though for some reason, my old log-in won't work!).

Thanks for all the comments - for those that have commented on us cutting the pieces up, we only did this for the "oversize" items - the large milk bottles, washing tablet boxes and the like.So it's not always how the media portray it! We weren't expecting any of this media storm, but suffice to say, we did plug MSE wherever we could, including on the BBC Breakfast sofa!

Apparently, Tesco have now changed their policy (apparently it was changed 8 weeks ago, and not thanks to us!) so that it is just metal cans and not plastic and glass, though can't vouch 100% for this - one of the BBC reporters had apaprently contacted Mr T's who had been told this...

Maybe - I'd swap your crystal ball for mine though, as mine is a bit more optimistic:D

I'm a bit late to this but congratulations and well done to you both! My next door neighbour and I are in competition to see who can find the best ways to increase our points, and he has been known to pick up litter from our road. I take home all the plastic and glass recycling from work and I have to go to Tesco early in the morning so no one gets annoyed by me posting 200 individual plastic cups into the machine :o

New automatic recycling at Tesco stores
Almost all of our larger stores have recycling facilities for you to use. To make things even easier, we’re introducing automatic recycling machines that do all the sorting for you. All you have to do is tip it in and it will sort through plastic, glass and metal at an incredible rate of around 80 products a minute. There are 27 at stores across the country, with more to comeTesco recycling centres

List of stores with Tesco recycling centres:
    Amersham
    Andover
    Baldock
    Borehamwood
    Brent Cross
    Bulls Bridge
    Cheshunt
    Colney Hatch
    Harlow
    Hatfield
    Havant
    Hayes
    Hoover Building
    Irlam
    Lakeside
    Long Eaton
    Osterley
    Portsmouth North Harbour
    Pitsea
    Rainham
    Romford Gallows
    Royston
    Shrewsbury
    Southampton
    Stafford
    Twickenham
    Watford
    Winchester

the store at brockworth gloucester can be added to this list

You get 1 point for every 4 items you recycle. ie plastic, glass and metal.

Cardboard and paper can be recycled in separate bins but no points awarded.
