Silly, but understandable. I read the article about that couple who recycled tonnes in order to pay for half their honeymoon trip. Amazing, but they also said quite happily that they were cutting cans and bottles in half in order to get more points.

They've kind of ruined it for the rest of us really. Such a pity!!

  • does anyone know if they will be installing anymore recycling points in the north east area (middlesbrough, stockton or hartlepool)
  • i'm really confused because i used the tesco recycling machine in chelmsford maybe 2 weeks ago. i put lots of things in like cans, bottles, and plastic bottles, and i got 19 points (i'm pretty sure i wasnt dreaming and my mum was there too and she saw that i got 19 points)
Anyway - i definatley didnt put in 38 cans to get the 19 points - im sure this came off all the things i put in.

But from the posts ive read on this forum, it seems like they started the 'points for cans only'last year.

    Can anyone help?

Does anyone know the current policy then?

EDIT: Reply from tesco - they only pay 1 point per 2 aluminium cans...

The price of recycled materials dropped like a stone in the Credit Crunch, partly because the less savvy members of the recycling chain had failed to sign up long term contracts, unlike the raw material suppliers.
This meant that when crunch came to credit and demand fell off, the contract that could be cancelled was the recycling one.
Add to this the fact that ships returning to the East carried recycling at bargain basement prices, cross subsidised by the expensive stuff coming the other way, capacity to transport scrap paper plastic and metal fell. If the containers are not coming back full of electronics, clothes, toys, then there are not enough to go back the other way.

I don't think claiming 4p for a 6 pint milk container, makes much difference either way.

well, it just goes to show the web site is a waste of time. i was having a look at some of the scrappage deals for cars so was in a different part of town than normal when i spotted a tesco extra. as i needed a couple of things, i popped in and guess what i saw just past the entrance. a flipping recycle machine!

so if you are in glasgow, go to the tesco at shettleston ( just beside the train station )

the moral seems to be, dont trust the web site and have a look yourself!
