I noticed our local Tesco Express had one of these the other day so dutifully collected a bag full of PET bottles and drinks cans and went to use the machine today. I put my card in and then put in all the bottles and cans and got to 4 points (it is 1 point for 4 cans or bottles on this machine). I then removed the card and found out that is when it registers, so I got no points it would seem
The instructions on screen are written in the same way as manuals for Chinese mp3 players. Arghh

I was really annoyed when Tesco got rid of the ordinary recycling bins at our local store and put one of these machines in a couple of years ago. They used to have a variety of bins, the normal ones plus an Oxfam clothes bin and a tetrapak bin. We stopped going there so much once our council started collecting recycling but still went to take the tetrapaks. One day all the bins disappeared and this machine appeared in their place. So now we have nowhere to recycle tetrapaks (although I will be more than happy if you put me right and tell me that the machine does indeed take them) and the council collect all the things the machine takes in the doorstep collection. I think an Oxfam bin has made a reappearance next to it, but not a tetrapak bin. Plus it seems to be missing the environmental point somewhat to have this machine lit up like a christmas tree night and day and using electricity to do what was previously done by hand.

Better start a campaign of writing to the stire manager asking when Tesco is going to use LED's for their night time lighting?:rotfl:
[Seriously though, in my younger more idealistic days, I was part of the Friends of the Earth campaign. We failed on the returnable bottle campaign and got PET bottles instead. However the "mail a drinks can to your local manager" about 15 years ago, seems to have born some sort of fruit.
An aluminium can and covering letter could be mailed for the price of a second class stamp in those days.]
  • Anybody have a link to show where these are or where they are going to be?

How many points do you get?

We are avid recylcers but also avid Tesco point collectors! We could make a fortune in pts and save the enviroment!
Irlam Extra store has one (to the west of Manchester), it credits 1 point for each bottle, can or plastic bottle
  • I was walking past the Tesco Extra store in Broomfield Road, Chelmsford and there was a foot-wide sticker on the front of their recycling machine saying 'NEW OFFER! 1 Clubcard Point for every 2 items recycled, and they don't have to be at the same time!' and I put 3 plastic bottles in and it came up as 1.5 points so I'm guessing if I go back with another 3 bottles it will give me 3 points in total... Not trying to sound like a martyr here, but I e-mailed Tesco's about 6 weeks ago telling them that giving absolutely no points for plastic was flawed because in Chelmsford the council collect plastics for free so why should we haul it down here just for Tesco's to make money out of it, anyway I got the general 'We're sorry but thats how it is...' system generated email. I then sent them another email, basicly saying 'look, don't bulls*** me, I know you make money out of our recycled plastics, so just be fair and share some of it with us in terms of points and we'll be more than happy to recycle with you forever'. I never got a reply so I assumed they just ignored it, then I saw this on the machine today... I've made a difference to the world for a change :-)

  • Does anyone know if the machines accept squashed cans? I have been squashing my cans flat for a couple of years (with one of those wall gadgets) and never quite managed to get around to taking them to the recycling place. I now have bags full of them but will the machine take them or only normal shaped ones?

    Many thanks for any help!

I've put in squashed ones and they have worked but some of the smaller ones (like redbull cans) are not recognised correctly.

If your not too far take a bag down and see how it goes, if it okay then take the rest.

Yeah definitely does - I normally save them up and take them down there by the sack. If your doing it for points only - then steel cans do not equal points - (i.e. Tango, 7up, Pepsi etc) only the aluminium cans (i.e. coke!)
