Funnily enough we were discussing this the other day, we could only think of the milkman now, that's takes bottles back :confused:

As a kid I think I can remember R Whites (who are still going), Corona and possibly Cresta that did refunds on the return of bottles. I'm assuming the breweries still do returns etc??

I'd love to know why it all stopped, we thought it was because of the dreaded plastic bottle arriving on the scene :confused:
As far as I am aware, no-one does returnable bottles. Maybe the odd firm I suppose somewhere.

Its an absolute disgrace really, in Holland all the beer bottles are returned and a deposit given back. Even the pubs here don't reuse bottles, talk about a throwaway society, I hate it.

In Belgium you take the empties to the supermarket - put them in a macine at the front, it scans and weighs them and gives you a money off voucher for your shopping or cash - what a brilliant idea.

The area I live in is excellent for recycling and we have a good percentage of recyclers but if they gave an incentive then more people would do it - those that just can't be bothered.

In the czech republic, you can take your bottles to a recycling sorter at most supermarkets. For bottles, it will give you your deposit back, and sort the bottles into the correct crates to be returned to the manufacturers. Very pleasing. Even Tesco's has them!!! Much better than smashing bottles in a bottle bank here, and much much better than throwing them away.

Hard cash for your 'rubbish' is the best incentive.

this kind of system used to be in place in france many years ago

    Corrrr lucky you!!! :p:p

We've got 3 large Tesco's in the Southampton area and yet only one has the machine, and it's not the biggest :confused:

3 ??? The one in Shirley with the machine, the one by junction 8 of the M27, where's the other one ? Not that I really go anywhere other than Tesco or Sainsbury in Shirley cos I can walk there.

We've only used the recycling machine once, to start with it wouldn't work, went to get back in the car and someone else came along and got it to work but didn't put their clubcard in so we got their points.

It has been done in Finland for many many years. Pretty much every supermarket have their own reverse bottle vending machines (as they are called) There are deposits on all cans and glass and plastic bottles which is returned to the customer by way of a voucher to be redeemed at the till of that particular shop. Not only does this way of recycling incentivise regular householders, it also aids a litter free environment and enables some to earn a few quid to survive.
Last year i went to an open air concert in Helsinki, Finland and everywhere i looked there was someone with some kind of receptacle for collecting waste.
There are also some Green charity groups that do this both to raise funds and also to protect the environment. But again you seldom see or hear of this in the UK.
I think that the UK is way behind the times with recycling and needs a good kick up the rear end!
Tesco has the global power to enforce recycling, i just wish they would get on with it!

    I totally agree with you.

Why are we so tardy and useless at recycling here?

Germany has had a similar system in place for 30 years or more. Any drink you buy that is in a glass bottle you pay a deposit on said bottle and when you bring it back to the shop you get that money back.

The UK is in the dark ages when it comes to living a greener lifestyle.

Anybody have a link to show where these are or where they are going to be?

How many points do you get?

We are avid recylcers but also avid Tesco point collectors! We could make a fortune in pts and save the enviroment!

You get 1 point for every 4 items you recycle. ie plastic, glass and metal.

Cardboard and paper can be recycled in separate bins but no points awarded.
