what're your reasons for not being on the organ donor registry?

I dont know if this has already been mentioned but..... I believe that all people should donate their organs once they die, reason for that is once you are dead you have no further use for them and you can save several other lives and improve the quality of life for people.
It annoys me, peoples understanding of organ donation - i had to educate one colleague that your body is 'not simply cut open' that they take care and respect your body. I have heard other arguments such as its not allowed in the bible/koran but they were not able to show me where it says you cannot donate your organs!
It also pi**es me off when people say they are would accept a organ but they would not donate one!
Additionally i would also like to see more people actually giving Blood Donations as this can also save peoples lives.:beer:In My 'Permanant' Pre-Masters Gap Year

I'd never really thought about organ donation until 18 months ago when a family member had a heart transplant.
He's now recovered enough to work again, to travel etc. Seeing someone I love waiting for months and months for a transplant, and all the let downs, I just thought "if I die tomorrow and I haven't registered for organ donation, I'd be potentially depriving a member of my own family from the chance to live" so I signed up.
I like to think that if ever anything happens to me, my family can gain comfort in the knowledge that bits that were now useless to me were giving someone a chance at life.
Having seen your recent posts on your shocking luck when it comes to the NHS, I expect that even though you'll have passed away, you'll still find something to complain about when the time comes for your donation.0 -
If you do not want to donate you are simply selfish and greedy imo.
.
Explain please. I will not donate
I've already said I will not accept an organ. How does that make me "selfish and greedy"? Keeping me alive with a donated organ will cost the NHS an awful lot of money in surgery and lifelong drugs.
I am actually SAVING the country money as well as releasing a donated organ for someone who wants to live at any cost.0 -

Try reading the rest of my post, including the quoted bit from marleyboy....
Edit - Maybe if I explain a bit better in one sentence you may read this one sentence and not ignore the rest of my post, I do not have a problem if people are not willing to donate if they do not expect to recieve should they require one and I thought this was obvious when I quoted marleyboy but obviously some people just read one sentence of a post and ignore the rest.
Hope this helps clarify, that's if you read beyond the first sentence.0 -
Haven't read the thread but HepC is my reason for not being on the organ donor registry.

if you're not on the register, why not?
(2) Looting the dead is generally frowned upon, although NHS CEO's who foresee charges being made to other hospitals for organs supplied, might disagree.
(3) I know that you haven't been that badly injured, but you see, someone a lot more important than you is an exact match ..."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
This is a horrible thread I find myself agreeing with the white horse!

What about an 'Organ Seller' card?

Then surely you should return it in a similar state to how it was loaned to you? I know what you are saying, but I think you really need to re-word or rethink this turn of phrase. When I loan someone something I want it back in a similar condition, of course considering normal wear and tear usage.
I find the idea of an opt-out system quite worrying. Does anyone really trust that such a database would be kept accurately? To 'harvest' someone who has specifically opted out is much more abhorrent to me than to miss a donor who has opted in.
My plan is to donate my body (or parts of it) for teaching purposes.0 -

This is in-line with my thinking. I would prefer to be used for medical research than to donate individual organs.
So if they changed the system, I would be sure to opt out.if i may ask, to those not on the register,
would you accept an organ if you (or your child) needed one ?
I don't have children, but I wouldn't want a donated organ.
The body always rejects them and you have to suppress that rejection for the rest of your life.
In addition, I don't want my family to decide. I want to be make the decision myself. So maybe two lists - an opt-out, and opt-in. The rest can be haggled over.0
