Nothing 'got my goat' at all.

I just wondered how you came to this conclusion...

and I'd still love to know, if my body isn't my body, whose body is it?

As for the last sentence of yours, where on earth did that come from????!!!
Our bodies came from nature, the same atoms are reused time and time again, so your body would have once been parts of other animals/plants/rocks and if you go back far enough parts of dying stars, so yes our bodies are borrowed and the universe will reuse our atoms to create new matter.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.

Well according to some on this thread I shouldn't get an organ because I never registered to donate. Hope none of you never have a sick baby or child who grows into an even sicker adult who would never in a billion years be suitable to donate organs but at 25 would die without a nice new one from someone who probably had no concept if just how close to death most organ recipients are. I knew I had less than 6 months, my family were told I had closer to 8 weeks.

That's funny as I could swear my body came from my parents.

  • if i may ask, to those not on the register,

would you accept an organ if you (or your child) needed one ?

Well then, I suggest you do some research and correct the errors in your knowledge.

  • I'm on the donation register and have been since I read about a baby who was seriously ill and urgently needed a transplant. It really made me think and I've carried a card ever since. However from another angle, I went on to have a baby whom had a terminal illness. Before he was born we had a meeting with a transplant nurse to discuss donation and I found I just couldn't do it. As he was seriously ill when he was born they said he would have to go right onto a ventilator until his organs could be taken. This wasn't for me at all, he was my baby and they made it sound like he would just be born to use for "spare parts". We did consider donating his heart valves which would be after he died but in the end he was too small, which privately I was glad about.
  • Having worked in a transplant unit I have seen how patients at death's door have walked out of the hospital 3 days after there transplant to lead normal lives. However my problem with donation is the definition of 'dead'.
Donors can only come from people who are brain dead - they have not actually died before donation i.e. they are kept on a ventilator until there organs are taken as the organs need to be 'fresh'.
I can't see myself allowing this to happen to my family as I would want to be with them until their last breath and I would also want to see if my loved one's brain could recover from the trauma, which one couldn't if offering organ donation.
Its a difficult one as I would also not hesitate to accept an organ if I needed it. However, I feel there should be more PR put into 'live' donation i.e. kidneys, liver and more research into heart 'regeneration' to avoid the need for so many donor transplants.

I have had an immune disorder that means that any organ I donate will be rejected for sure, despite immunosuppressants. There's no point in putting a very sick person at further risk, the disappointment would be secondary.

I can't give blood for the same reason :(.

I can't donate blood as I'm very anaemic, however I am on the organ donor register and also the Anthony Nolan register, for bone marrow.
To be honest, it wasn't something I would ever think twice about, if I have the option of saving a life of course I'd take it, no questions asked.

I also think it should be an opt-out system, especially since the next of kin get the final say so there is a check there, it's not like the doctors just rush in and take everything going. If I'm honest though, a large part of me disagrees with next of kin being able to say no. If the person joined the register it's something they feel strongly about and believed in, so why should someone else be able to remove that from them? I do understand it is hard for family members but I still can't help disagreeing.

It does make me sad when people refuse to donate but would take organs if they needed them - it's a bit selfish to my mind and I'm glad not everyone feels that way.
