unfairness in school. rant

Sorry just a rant really about something that keeps happening at my childs school. Any special things happening from school, ie poppy service in town, supermarket opening, cheques being presented from fundraising etc it is always the same child/ children picked to do it all and represent the school. my son 10 has picked up on this and to be honest im annoyed. dont get me wrong i dont expect it to be my child that is picked, but i do think it should be shared out, shouldnt matter about childs ability or beliefs. my son thinks it due to the fact that these children attends church regularly as often if a few children are going 3 out of the 4 attend church. wonder if i should say something to the head, he is approachable , im sure my child isnt the only one that has noticed this. think in fairness names could be put in a hat for those children that would like to take part in these events. sorry rant over, its just really annoyed me today because just found out same children are yet again involved in something tomorrow.

Yes, but life isn't always fair.

  • if they are representing the school then the best children to do that should be picked. fairness doesnt come into it when a professional reputation is on the line.

    I agree with this...

The school will want the smartest (appearance) and most well behaved to represent them as they want the organisation to appear successful and those representative children can make or break that image with one pick of the nose or unexpected swear word etc.

What do you think of the church attendees apparently being favoured, is that a good school for your son?

There are a lot of well behaved children in the school, so they have plenty to choose from, even some of the children who arnt always the best behaved in my opion should be given the chance. a quick photo for the newspaper would not be past any of the childrens ability. My child is one of the well behaved as are lots more, just think it would seem fairer to let some of the others take a turn, like i said im not saying pick my child , just share it out a little .The school is not particulary a churchy school, my children enjoy going and have good friends. maybe i just need to distance myself from it abit more but I'm not the only parent who has noticed it either.

Surely ability does come into it? If they have to stand up and talk in front of people, for example, then it would make no sense to pick out the painfully shy kid to do it. That wouldn't be fair either, IMO.

Do the newspapers pick out the child for pics? I can only remember a handful of times that this happened at my primary school, and one in particular where the newspaper chose the 2 kids for the photo.

I am sure there are lots of reasons why. Perhaps these children are well behaved as a group, less likely to become over excited, always well turned out, their parents always return permissin slips at short notice, the parents are involved in the school, there is an agreement already in place with the parents regards taking the kids out of school, they offer to drive them or live close by to the school.etc etc.

I would have a little word with the teacher and ask how they decide as it woudl be lovely for the other children to get involved as well. Perhaps you could make it clear you would be happy to help out in terms of transport, packed lunches or whatever else is needed. there may be some policy in place which you don't know about because you haven't asked.

Yes i do think it is a good school for my sons, just this slight problem i am having, unsure whether i should mention my concerns to the head, it isnt just me that has noticed , some other parents have also mentioned it. I agree you do want to represent the school in a good light, but that choice could be made from most of the school, ive helped out in the school so no quite a lot of the kids.

Again i would agree with this, show of hands on who would like to go etc, only children who want to be picked , but does seem to be the heads choice in the matter, on who gets chosen.
