In fact it costs more to put an unemployed person in to a firm on these Work Placement schemes as the unemployed person gets extra money to cover travel.
Not according to the ones they shove in the charity shop I volunteer at
    What Would Bill Buchanan Do?
  • I dont think the British Heart Foundation Shop is a chain store is it? Wouldnt that be classed as a charity shop?
I've never heard of the British Heart Foundation providing counselling to the unemployed but if they do good for them-they have obviously found a gap.
Also i think working full time for a charity for dole money is also stretching it a bit- A couple of days per week perhaps?

Poundland are an utter disgrace as is this wretched government to allow such a thing.

This is not a charity, a voluntary organisation and it is not individuals volunteering to work for experience.

It is big business filling their fat coffers with slave labour ok'd by this tory/liberal mob.

What a disgrace. Boycott Poundland, who wants to buy a $hitty set of 4 plastic microwave proof dishes for a £1 anyway?

Travel costs, childcare costs and replacement carer costs are paid (with discretion) by JCP for those on the Work Programme.

Erm being fairly new to this can I just ask, is Richard a troll? No one can really be that naive about the state of employment in the country can they? Having a good work ethic is great but even people with that ethic have found themselves unemployed and unable to find work...I just don't believe there are still people who haven't realised this yet? Maybe they will soon!

From the horses mouth re placement positions of LT unemployed...they are supposed to be for the worker to receive training and acquire new skills with the double 'benefit' that they

    a) may be taken on by the company ( hardly ever happens because the company is much better off having a succession of unpaid workers!).

    B) can then add their newly acquired skills to their CVs to make them more employable. (Yep when there's few jobs and up to 150 people applying for 1 that works really well).

Poundland ,any retail outlet at Christmas, needing staff ...does not have time to offer proper training as per the point and purpose of this scheme. It is an abuse of it, particularly as retail stores WILL pay for Christmas staff anyway.

Because the life of a person on benefits is just sitting down watching tv all day, they never leave the couch or do anything worthwhile.

I think that's unfair to put everyone in the same mould. Whilst there are some like that, majority are not.

The companies should be paying those people not using them for unpaid labour.
  • As I have said before, there are companies doing this for the wrong reasons and should not be allowed to continue taking people on, OK got that out of the way.
There are, however, many companies that are providing invaluable training and experience on this programme for people who really need it to be able to return to employment. They have bought into the scheme and far from using the candidates as free labour, they are providing training and mentoring that costs more than paying NMW for 4 - 8 weeks.
  • Make company pay cost of benefits to the Job centre. Still cheap labour for them, and less of a burden for the tax payer.
Wanted a job, now have one.

Why should a company that is providing free training, mentoring, reference, entry on a cv etc then have to pay for doing this?
