I was talking to some staff in the shop earlier as I am a very chatty person, I was shocked to find ALL the christmas staff were forced there by the jobcentre unpaid for the entire christmas period.

I have a feeling its the companies policy to get loads of free staff since when I was living in another town 2 years ago and was looking around at volunteer retail work I found out many of the staff at the branch in that town were volunteers too.

Maybe thats why they can sell products so cheap!(Not sure to name company)

How normal is this sort of practice? With jobs hard to come by as it is, it seems to take opportunities away.

EDIT : Hmm seems it is a common thing http://politicalscrapbook.net/2011/03/now-jobseekers-told-volunteer-at-poundland-or-lose-your-benefits/

What I have seen is thse staff work 9-5/6 5 days a week so its full time not just a few hours a week, terrible how companies work these days!

  • The way I see it is that if you dont have a job what right is it that you refuse to work because you feel the job is not right for you. Why should everyone else who pays taxes contribute to these people being so picky over their jobs. If you dont have a job and you have bills to pay then you really should take any job that you can rather than depending on the state.

I think the point is that these 'jobs' aren't paid and you have to do them to get jsa

They could be paying taxes, but they're working for free instead.

    Think that's the point.

I wonder how happy all the taxpayers are that their money is basically going into the pockets of these companies?

So why are they not taking these jobs in the first place... some of these people have no intention of working and will refuse every job because they think they are above that.

WEll I am sorry if you are claiming JSA and have bills to pay then you need to take whatever job you can get to get you back on your feet at which point you can look for something more suitable thats how I was brought up.

There are jobs available out there. Not ideal jobs for everybody but jobs all the same. People moan about the polish taking our jobs well its because the British are too lazy to work!

Id rather it go into the pockets of companies than have people sat at home all day watching tv while I go out to work.

What are you going on about? I was talking about a big company having quite a few unpaid staff i.e taking advantage when they should be getting paid staff to do the work.

The person is still depending on the state doing unpaid work so I dont know what you are talking about.

    Or

Why aren't the companies paying for these workers in the first place?

Honestly, whilst I agree that people on JSA should be made to work or lose benefits; if they are doing a job then they should be paid NMW or above for it. Companies who are getting staff for free are taking the p.

    Isn't that the point?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Wouldn't you rather these companies created 50 actual jobs instead of taking on workfare? That would be 50 less people for you to support..

Because the life of a person on benefits is just sitting down watching tv all day, they never leave the couch or do anything worthwhile.

The type of person who talks like you do is normally someone doing simple work but think that gives them a right to complain about people that are in a different situation than them.
