Driving licence query
Hi All,
Hope this is the right forum for my question.
My daughter has lost her purse - she thinks she put it on the roof of her car while at the petrol station, forgot it was there & drove off - it's not in her bag or in our house.
Her purse contained her driving licence so clearly she has to send off for a replacement.
I assume she can continue to drive while she waits for a new licence to arrive, should she notify anyone? I'm going to advise her to notify the police even if just to get a crime reference number, but is there anyone else she should notify on the off chance she is stopped whilst driving?
Thanks for any replies.

It can't do any harm. It would also cover her in the event that somebody uses the lost licence for identity theft purposes.I'm going to advise her to notify the police even if just to get a crime reference number
Once the police have been notified as above, then that's all. Obviously, DVLA will know when they receive the application for the replacement. If she is stopped, she will have seven days to produce the licence at a police station before she is prosecuted, so you need to hope that DVLA get a wiggle on.but is there anyone else she should notify on the off chance she is stopped whilst driving?0 -
Just report it as lost to the police, you won't get a crime number as there is no evidence of any crime taking place.0

Incident number is probably the phrase the OP intended to use.The_Turner wrote: »Just report it as lost to the police, you won't get a crime number as there is no evidence of any crime taking place.

That was the phrase I meant to use
She will report it to the police, good idea about the identity theft, hadn't thought of that.
She knows she made a stupid mistake but it makes me so angry that someone has taken it and it's now lots of hassle for her. Without wanting to be harsh, I don't suppose she'll do it again! This has been an expensive mistake with lots of hassle for her.0 -
You won't get an incident number either
You just need to pop into your local police station and report it lost in the street
You will get a reference number for that
Have you actually made any effort to find it?
Lost purses get handed in at our stations all the time. They will be minus any cash, but almost all have the driving licences inside.
Try going back to the petrol station and phoning your local police stations0 -
And to answer the most important question, yes, she can continue to drive as you do not need to carry a driving licence with you. If she's stopped, the Police will check her details directly with DVLA.
It's annoying, and costs a few quid for the replacement, but it's not the end of the world.0 -

We have made every effort to find it. She had me search her room and the house, it's definately not here, her handbag isn't so huge that it could get lost in it. She's been back to both the petrol station and into Tesco's. The police station was closed when she tried to call in there, obviously a small market town one (although I still think it's strange that it was closed) so she will go into the police station tomorrow and again into the petrol station and Tescos and leave her number for them to contact her in the event someone honest hands it in.0 -

Although it is still an offence to fail to produce it to a police officer on demand.0 -
No it isn't.The_Turner wrote: »Although it is still an offence to fail to produce it to a police officer on demand.
As long as you can provide proof of identity, the worst case is you will be given the HORT-1 form which means you need to produce your documents at a Police station within seven days - although most checks are done electronically now.0 -
