Does Anyone Elses Partner 'Wet' the Bed?

I've been with my other half for about 5 years, and getting married soon. He was pretty wild before settling down, drink AND drugs. He gave up the drugs when we became serious, but the drinking has been less forthcoming...He'd regularly comsume a bottle of red EVERY night. After a serious agreument he agreed that his drinking was a major problem in our relationahip. He's so far doing incredibly well. However, after a skin full, he'd sometimes wet the bed. The first time it happened i was horrified. It's happened a few time since, but it's been about a year since it last happened. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm so embarressed about it i've never told anyone, although i know he's mentioned it at work, like it was some kind of hilarious joke...

  • My ex used to - and probably still does - after getting so drunk,he would fall into a very deep sleep and nothing would wake him up. I was absolutely horrified and disgusted with him, especially as it ruined a new mattress. I asked him when he eventually woke up and claimed it was nothing and he had done a lot worse when drunk! He had done it several times in the relationship. Im sure were not alone and others have had this happen...! One idea i considered was tena for men or those puppy breaking in pads from the pound shops.
    ;)
  • Thing is, i never even knew men did this! previous BF's never did it, although fiance is most serious relationship i've had. He doesn't do it any more, and he bought a new matress after the last time. Thankfully he's cut down drastically on the drinking now.

a friend of mine told me about her ex husband doing this, of all places at a friends house when they stayed over night, he too had been really drunk and wet the bed

i think its really different if he had an illness which causes incontinence, there are medications and or pads that can help but if its drink related the solution is very simple, stop drinking

i would have to chuck out the mattress im afraid

If I ever drank so much that I ended up wetting the bed I would never drink again.

I can see how it happens though... alcohol affects your sleep state and also the way in which the brain processes information. If you consume enough alcohol that it effectively knocks you out the brain might not be able to send the usual signals to wake you up so that you go the loo.

There was a thread here several months ago where someone said that their OH would just wee in the hallway after a skinful - I can't recall how conscious the OH was of doing this.

It sounds like you are saying your partner's problem is caused by alcohol and that he has made good progress addressing the issue.

However adults can wet the bed entirely through no fault of there own. When you sleep your body releases a hormone which stops you urinating. I know someone (early twenties) who has to take this hormone as a pill because her body does not produce enough of it.
  • I have heard of drunks doing this - and worse!

Honestly, if anyone ever peed in my bed they'd better not ever get drunk again or that would be it. Once I suppose I'd have to forgive. More than that - get out of my life (and bed) you disgusting scumbo.

You sound very tolerant. Is your OH actually an alcoholic? Have you been to Al-Anon for some support - this is for family members/partners of alcoholics. Anyone who's peed the bed because of drink has got to have a serious problem. If he just thinks it's funny, he's not accepting that he has that problem.

Look after yourself. I've seen alcoholics drag so many others down with them. Don't sacrifice your own life to help him.

My ex wet the bed once and I have a couple of male friends who apparantly have the "odd" accident after a good booze up.
Another male friend has a habit of sleepwalking and peeing in random places after a booze - best one was opening the hall cupboard and aiming at the fuse box! Luckily his wife caught him just in time!
  • my cousin used to do this every single weekend to the point my aunt actually put a plastic sheet on the bed. it never bothered him coz he didnt need to clean it up!

does he still do this or are you worried that his drinking will increase and he will start again?

My hubby wet the bed once after drinking too much. He was so ashamed and embarrassed the next morning. I wouldn't have been amused if he'd made a joke out of it.
  • OMG - no way would I ever be with somebody who did this - just a bit of pee on the toilet seat pi$$es me right off. OH has been warned and always makes an effort to clean itor lift the seat lol.

I honestly would rather be single than share my bed with a load of urine. Even my (just turned) 3 year old has better sleeping habits than your OH. Not a dig at you, at him.

Glad he has cut down his drinken, or I dare say the wedding would be off lol.
