Torry, for my birthday or Christmas I wouldn't have been so busy, and neither would I receive gifts from 40 different couples to write a thank you for!
Edit - I also had to wait for the professional photographer and our photobooth photographer to hand over the pictures to get everything set up. Then create a Vista Print order - which took 14 days to be made (or 28 if you take an even slower option). We also arranged 120 various prints via Photobox and had those delivered.
It was a fairly detailed process. I completely understand why people expected them sooner, but I wrote 3 paragraphs in each card - to thank them dearly for attending, to say we'd had a wonderful time, recalling a moment from the day we appreciated, thanking them for the gift, letting them know what we use it for/how well it suits our home.
Etc.Torry Quine - we have been sending thank you cards for engagement gifts within a week of receiving them, but then these are 'off the shelf' thank you cards The wedding thank you cards will take longer because they will have to be designed and ordered, as MaggieBaking pointed out. I think that 2 months is pretty reasonable, especially if we're on honeymoon for half of that. We want ours to be made from our photos, they will involve a lot of thought and effort. The idea of having to have a personal designed thank you card with a photo from the wedding is a new one to me which obviously does take time.
i really don't get what is wrong with 'off the shelf' cards myself but it's up to you.
40 gifts is not that many, I'm sure many couples get more.
 A month long honeymoon- gosh!

i really don't get what is wrong with 'off the shelf' cards myself but it's up to you. I know, I don't like 'off the shelf' cards, but I don't for birthday or Christmas either, I always do personalized ones. I think shelf bought ones aren't as personal and could be just any card.
40 gifts is not that many, I'm sure many couples get more. 40 presents? wow, I consider that a huge amount and you are very lucky and must have been extremely grateful. I think I would be overwhelmed at 40 presents. Remember 40 cards though would probably take a long long time to write. I'm presuming you would't just write to xyz, thanks for the present love abc. You'll probably want to put in a personal message, a note about the wedding and honeymoon and maybe more. It would take up a lot of time, plus you'd get a bit tired and have to stop or your writing would go squewif.
A month long honeymoon- gosh! I know, how lucky are you!

I think that's the beauty of this site, so many differing opinions, I love seeing what everyone else does and is planning on doing.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

I didn't say I got 40 presents, I honestly have no idea it's a while ago but said many people get more judging by the size of guest lists on here.
When I sent my cards they were mostly before the wedding and simply said thanks for your gift of xxx, if memory serves.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I wasn't saying you did, Maggybaking said she had 40 thank you's to write, and you replied with that 40 gifts wasn't that many. I was just meaning wow to me that's amazing and how lucky.
I didn't mean you had received 40....Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

No you don't seem hard - as another poster said, it's always great to get different opinions. Yes, I don't think that 40 is a lot, I just mean that for Christmas 10 people might buy me a present, more people than that bought gifts for the wedding - which is why it would take longer to send out a thank you for the wedding gift.
The personalised cards I did because quite often people want to see an "official photograph" of the wedding, but I felt a bit uncomfortable just putting in a picture of my husband and I in the card. By making our picture into the card, people would feel more comfortable throwing it away :rotfl:
As said, I understand why people might expect them sooner, but I'm happy with the length of time it took because of how much went into each one.0

Re the personalized cards - there is no special need for them I agree, but in our case it was easier to just get them from VistaPrint as they make the process nice and easy... clever marketing! Ours were pretty plain, and just said thank you from KMMR and KMMR's husband.
Anyway I am pretty sure they were cheaper than I would get anywhere else for cards. Can't remember quite how much they were, but everything from there was so cheap - plus you get envelopes etc. I also bought sheets of little stickers with our name and address on, which saved the time of writing our address on each envelope.
The only slightly expensive thing was the postage!
The actual cards didn't say they were wedding thank you's, and we have a lot left... so if we are careful to not duplicate, we can probably use them for other things!! 0 0

Why do people feel the need to have expensive personalised cards. I admit, they can be lovely if you have the time, energy and money but there is nothing wrong with a proper letter written on nice stationary. Cheap, cheerful and really rather classy.0

£23.74 for 50 personalised cards (folded) or £12.49 for unfolded. Including envelopes I don't think that is too much!0

I'm with you Pinkteapot. We did the same for our wedding. I sat down and did handwritten thank yous to everyone the day after we got back from honeymoon and enclosed personalised photos with each one. I think it's the height of rudeness to not write a thank you for a gift.0

Nobody is criticising 'off the shelf' cards, I am just saying that *we* want personalised cards and we feel that it's worth the extra effort... And hopefully our guests will love them and understand why they took a little longer! We will also be writing proper personal notes in each of them about our memories of seeing X on the day, not just a standard 'dear X, thanks for your gift of a bedlinen set, love W and MrW'.
 As for your comment about a month-long honeymoon, what's that supposed to mean? Gosh indeed. Yes, we will have a month-long honeymoon but it won't be 5 star luxury - it's likely to be in India, which is a super cheap place to go! Therefore, it will cost less than fortnight in Europe, even with flights included. And why not have a month away? We will have saved hard to afford it and it will be fantastic.7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs 14 Feb: 10st4.5lbs 14 Feb: 10st4.5lbs 21 Feb: 10st4lbs * 1 March: 10st2.5lbs :j13 March: 10st3lbs (post-holiday) 21 Feb: 10st4lbs * 1 March: 10st2.5lbs :j13 March: 10st3lbs (post-holiday) 30 March: 10st1.5lbs 30 March: 10st1.5lbs 4 April: 10st0.75lbs * 6 April: 9st13.5 lbs 4 April: 10st0.75lbs * 6 April: 9st13.5 lbs 27 April 9st12.5lbs * 16 May 9st12lbs * 11 June 9st11lbs * 15 June 9st9.5lbs * 20 June 9st8.5lbs 27 April 9st12.5lbs * 16 May 9st12lbs * 11 June 9st11lbs * 15 June 9st9.5lbs * 20 June 9st8.5lbs 27 June 9st8lbs * 1 July 9st7lbs * 7 July 9st6.5lbs 27 June 9st8lbs * 1 July 9st7lbs * 7 July 9st6.5lbs 0 0
