  • Hi all,

I'm new on here and needed some info regarding Barclaycard taking over the Egg business and felt compelled to divulge some useful information based on my own experiences.

Ten years ago while at college I worked at a company that dealt with, amongst many others, the Egg credit card facilities specialising in the debt recovery department. While this brief advice is not specifically Egg / Barclaycard related, it is indicative of the industry procedure and should serve as a warning to anyone with a credit facility.

One credit card provider, based in the north and pivotal in the credit crunch, had been acquired by another provider – 50+ years in the business and as a result all payments due by direct debit for the switch over months were affected, mainly by the failure of payments taken automatically, and as a result thousands accrued extra interest and late payment charges as a result. The instructions from above, and I mean the providers here, was that there was to be no mention of this to customers unless their suspicions were aroused and only if they challenged for a refund then they would get one. In a nutshell, the providers knew the payments wouldn't take and charges would be added and as long as nobody noticed then they would make a tidy few quid.

One of many unscrupulous practices that come as no surprise...

    Hi all,

Just a quick reply to this!!
Same thing happened to me and despite several calls to BC I was unable to get this fixed. After reading this I decided to call this morning.
I spoke to a really helpful guy in great Britain who is now trying to sort this out for me. Hopefully this will erase the 2 default notices on my credit file!!! He has refunded me the charges and has assured me that I will receive a callback from one of his team by 8pm tomorrow (22/05/12). So I will update if and when I receive the call.

If you go into the account online you can vary the existing Direct Debit to collect (i) Minimum payment, (ii) Full balance or (iii) A fixed amount (or min payment whichever is greater). You can also make additional payments by debit card which will reduce the D/D taken. What you can't apparently do is choose the payment date, but this is not uncommon with other credit cards.

This is hopefully me just being dumb, but what the quote above says and the text on the barclaycard website says ("The amount will be reduced by any payments received since your last statement.") seems to imply that any adhoc payments I make will result in the DD (fixed for me) taking less than I requested. Eg if I choose to pay an adhoc £50 and then the DD date comes around, if my DD is normally £200, it will actually only take £150?

That isn't particularly useful for me as I'd like to have a fixed £200 payment but choose to pay more through adhoc payments if I have extra money available.

I'm assuming the other way around would have no impact though? ie wait for DD date to pass, and then process any additional payments before the new statement?

Am I just being stupid? (You don't all need to rush to answer that one!) customer Service weren't much help!

    Thanks
  • Hello

Thought i would share an ongoing issue regsrding the transfer of egg to barclaycard. I had been on a repayment plan through egg cards solicitors. Not a single payment had been missed. I had not been informed of any transfer at the time from either egg card, the debt recovery solicitors or barclaycard. Soon after i received a barclaycard statement with an amount of approximately £2500 added to my original debt from egg. I was surprised at first as i didnt have a barclaycard card. They refused to talk to me about my own account and said to spesk to the debt recovery company, but didnt know who thry were and didnt even know what this really was, as i never owned a barclaycard.

I eventually got to the bottom of it, but i keep being fobbed off and advised that they would look into it. I have provided all the proofs. and is easily proved. Not a single payment had been missed so why the increase in my debt.Still no response a year on.

I am now scared that they might start charging me interest, although i have not paid any since i was with egg.

Please could someone advise i am old and ill, and am doing my best to pay off my debts but feel im going 1 step forward and ten steps back

    Thanks
    Jay

I don't know how repayment plans work and I think Debt-Free Wannabe board is a better place to ask about this.

Generally, you have to follow Barclaycard formal complaints procedure and then, if you are not satisfied, take your case to the FSO:

  • Hopefully someone can help, like many my egg card was closed long time ago and passed to Barclaycard, I have been paying off at a high interest every monthh, just today I applied for and was accepted by Halifax for a 30month interest free £5700 money transfer card.
On the application Halifax require my Barclaycard Card number and expiry date, however as the account has been closed for some years I have never been issued with a card with expiry date on it.

I contact Barclay Card and they inform me that they cannot and will not supply me with an expiry date and the ONLY was to pay off this high interest debt is via Bank transfer, however I don't have that sort of money in my bank account and want to avail of Halifax's offer of 30month interest free.

Anyone out there experience with this or any advice

    Cheers

I think I have read on here before that the expiry date is validated during the BT process, so just make one up with a future date
