Exactly my point, the instigator of the petition has stated this in the recent past

They may only account for only 10%, but they have only been coming here freely since 2004, what would the percentage be if they had been coming here since the 1950's which is the time I believe we first saw the West Indian community arriving ( I shudder to think).

so what exactly is your view about the overall level of immigration?

that it should be unlimited because otherwise it could be consider racist?

that it should be limited only to non-white to prove our non-racist credentials (yes I know this is racist too)

    or something else?

My own view is that it would be very positive if we could have immigration from young people who will quickly assimilate themselves into the local population and onwards help to change the age profile of the nation. IMHO Polish workers seem a good example of this, although they obviously cause some irritation in the short term, but if we are talking about overcrowding to ignore the Eastern/Central Europeans seems disingenuous. It is not only Europeans that can assimilate, I was watching Countryfile last night and some children of Gurkha soldiers seemed to be doing OK and having to speak Nepalese, English and Welsh  in Brecon.

To be fair I think that Polish migration was dramatically front loaded.

It's quite a sad day when people sign up to such a petition. England has some of the most fantastic countryside walks views and rolling hills in the World. I'd be extremely irate if people were allowed to develop cheap nasty housing on it. PROTECT OUR GREENBELT.

so you are in favour of unlimited immigration of young people capable of assimilation?
that will probably be something of the order of 1000 million potential candidates

Could you point out in my post where I stated that I was in favour of unlimited immigration?

I can't imagine anyone in this country who whould be in favour of unlimited immigration :) BTW the question looked rhetorical to me.

The trouble with any debate on immigration is that it soon gets hijacked by the more extreme members of either the left or the right.

Generally people in the UK are pretty tollerant, several of my neighbours are immigrants, and a few more are of non-white backgrounds, not sure whether it was their parents/grandparents or other that moved here. Everyone on the whole seems to be just getting on with life. My only gripe is my Sri Lancan neighbours create such nice cooking smells and dont invite me round to eat!!

But to allow a constant stream of new people to move here means we need to house, school and provide other services. We dont have the money to do all this. Its time we were a lot more selective about who can move here, and stop the easy benefits for anyone that turns up simply for work purposes. Its a shame the benefit bill for other EU nationals cant be sent back to their country of origin.

I have nothing against (genuine) asylum seekers and I'm glad i live in a country people want to get to, rather than one people want to get away from. However the system is abused, I thinks its great we can offer a home to those seeking genuine help from persecution, but we dont send away those who are falsly claiming asylum. The fakes get too much help, which prevents us helping those who have fled somewhere in fear of their lives rather than those that want some cash.

The politicians are scared of the debate, so the only voices we seem to hear are the more extreme nuts such as the EDL, BNP etc. Its time the mainsteam parties started to tackle this issue.

Personally I tihnk that the benefit system should be changed in such a way to put off those from the EU (and elsewhere maybe?) that intend to come here and claim benefits from day 1. We cant stop people from the EU coming here (fair enough), but what about if you have to be a UK resident for 16years before you can claim ANY benefits? That way kids leaving school and job seeking still get their benefit and single parents (well parents in general) would still get what they get. etc etc
