My son who is almost 20 and lives at home with myself has just lost his p/t job. He was working for a window cleaner, my son had various times off sick, his boss had had times off sick and my son hasnt been able to work so no pay, his boss has also been taking a relative to hospital so again my son hasn't worked so no money. Today my son went to work after having yesterday off sick due to a chest infection and bad cold, his boss had words with him about his sick time and things escalated to him saying my son had an attitude and didn't want him in the car so my son told him to shove his job. Will he be able to claim JSA I've been told he won't by friends but what's he supposed to do for money?

Instead of worrying about his money for now, have you had a serious chat about his conduct and future prospects?

You say he has had time off sick and when it was challenged by his boss, he told him to "shove it".

You need to sit him down and explain the issues. Perhaps he took your sign as "well what are you going to do about money" as sanctioning his conduct instead of talking to him about responsibility.

Instead of looking at who else can give him some cash (ie tax-payers) can he not go back apologise and ask for his job back?

Failing that he will be sanctioned from 0 - 26 weeks with the JSA and get no money. Perhaps enough time for him to reflect on his conduct?

He could apply for crisis payments but assuming he lives at home the chances are slim. Is that the whole household now on benefits?

    Some moments of thought ahead!

How about no longer being masochistic?
    How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?
  • knowing my former window cleaner well(we have moved this year),he told me many of his customers have stopped using window cleaners in order to save a few bob,he in fact had to lay off his own son this year
so maybe the OPs sons boss was just looking for an excuse to provoke such a reaction

Thank you for your advice but I dont need lecturing on how to interact with my son. I am not dumb I know that benefits are funded part by tax payers. Of course my main worry is money because I cant afford it due to being on a tight budget as it is. Nobody can live without money.

I take it he has already rang his boss, apologised and asked for another chance?

Was the job properly 'on the books' with income tax and NI deducted?

Was he paying you rent from his wages?

You should be able to increase your housing benefit if he has no wage, assuming you claim it and had a deduction for a dependent?

You may lose out on any money he paid you, but you don't need to pay him anything. Let him go without any extras and he'll be more likely to get out there and find another job.

Give him money to subsidise his sanction and he will have no incentive whatsoever!

Sounds like he's a but too keen on making excuses anyway! One day off with a chest infection...? Yeah, right!

Seriously, don't encourage his lazy attitude. He will hopefully thank you for taking the tough line one day.

Does he have a driving license ?. If he does, help him to buy a ladder, bucket, leather and all the other bits a window cleaner needs, then he can go and under-cut his former boss.
