Have to agree to differ on this one. I would rather do a little extra work than catch some nasty virus. Last winter a collegue came to work thinking she was being a hero with a nasty virus/infection, it spread around my work place like wild fire. She sneezed and spluttered constantly, once with her face inches from mine. Consequentley I caught it and was ill all over the Christmas holidays.

There is a big difference between a cold and a 'nasty virus'!

Also there is big difference between a cold and a chest infection with a fever of over 38 degrees.

Yes it's my sons 1st job and he only got that because the bloke done my mums windows.

As I've said before I don't think sending him out into the cold and working hours in the cold is going to help the infection or cold. I must be such a bad mother for thinking that. If he was a small child I wouldn't of sent him to school, much better at home to get better and also not infecting everyone else with it!

I really don't think he needs to be apologising. I don't think it's ok for his employer to have digs at him for his sickness, my son wouldn't make comments or digs to his boss when he's off sick, or when he's taken his relative to hospital and my son cant work and isn't earning any money.

I was in a situation when I was younger where I was picked on in a job and I wish I had the guts to stand up for myself. If I was in that situation now I'd certainly stand up for myself.

Perhaps giving the job up was the best thing because as bad weather comes he wouldn't be working anyway and have no money.

He's 20, and this has been his first job????? What in heaven's name has he been doing with himself since he left education? Has he not done ANYTHING before this job? And he only got this job because the window-cleaner cleaned his gran's windows? What about Job Centre/Connexions/Training Centres ....has he hever had any contact with any of these places? If not - why not?

You (and he) really need a reality check!

    Over 38 isn't a fever, it's a slightly high temperature :rotfl:

Good lord, I can't imagine the cost to the country if everyone who had a temperature over 38 took time off work.

OP you seem to be getting het up because people are telling you what you don't want to hear. But in the long run, you'll do your son no good pampering to him. His lax attitude toward sickness days seems to show that some damage has been done already.

You clearly value your principles more than you value having an income. In which case, you'll have to hope that your principles will pay the bills.

So your not allowed off sick then?

My original question was regarding whether he could claim JSA very few people have answered this question, instead they seem to rip apart my son for being ill and standing up for himself.

Well im done with this now. I have the answer I originally asked for.

Of course you are, if it's serious. What a silly question. But coughs, colds, slightly raised temperatures are not serious.

He should be able to make a claim for income based JSA however he is likely to be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks as he gave up his job

On the other hand it's up to the jobcentre to claim he left voluntarily so if both him and the employer said the job had run it's course then he might not get sanctioned.
