I'm trying to count my points too. I've had a bash at WW No Count or Core as it's called now.

I find it very frustrating though, trying to work out points in things I've made myself like bread, yogurt, stock and anything really. There seems to be a lot of brainwork involved unless you buy everything in a packet where it's all done for you. I don't go to meetings, but from the WW magazine and the message boards on the WW site I get the impression that ready-made food is considered the norm and only way to do it.

Absolutely, this is the problem I have with most diet plans. I look at a slowcooker full of casserole and I'm blowed if I can work out the points/syns/calories per portion! When I first went to WW two years ago they'd only just introduced the No Count system and they claimed at the time that they were trying to break away from the notion that you need special "diet" food. Doesn't stop them endorsing all those expensive WW products in the shops though  Have you seen the price of WW crisps?

Just to veer OT slightly. I am also on WW and I am trying to cook from scratch, I have found a great site which is not connected to WW but it is for WW followers:

    http://www.healthdiscovery.net/forums/

There are ton of recipes, advice, etc so maybe it will be good for some of you?
It is a US site but there is a section for international/UK members.

i think you can do it, just takes a bit of time initially!

basically i add the points values of ingredients when i'm making something, then divide it by the proportion of it i'm having....for instance:

    homemade yog that i make:
1 litre UHT skimmed milk = 4 points
4 tablespoons skimmed milk powder (it says that 4.5 rounded tablespoons makes a pint), so i count that as 2 points

therefore whole litre of yog is 6 points, i usually eat it in about 6 portions so that makes it 1 per portion.....

once you've worked it out, just write it down, or remember it!!

You're right Rach. I need to know how many tbsp there are in a litre of yogurt. It can be done, but it's a pain. I'll have to get a little notebook and write it all down ;)

Yes, this is a useful thread, but it doesn't address the issues I have a problem with. These relate specifically to trying to lose weight in an OS way. That is, not buying ready meals, or relying on packaged goods but by cooking my family good, healthy and cheap meals that are low in fat/cals/points for me and still good for the kids (none of whom need to lose weight).

    Yes, boss. :)

A quick scan showed that not everybody on that thread uses the "standard" stuff offered by WW but are looking for MoneySaving and healthy ways to help lose weight.

So as such I considered it to be useful link - one more bit of help in the never ending fight to lose weight :)

Edit: I say "never ending" because while individuals do indeed win their battles with weight - the war goes on. I'm pretty sure that there's a bit of graffiti scribbled on a wall in Pompeii that goes something like:-

Maximus Weightius? Locatum Weightia Gloria Minimus

This is where I find No Count very good because you are not measuring or weighing anything. Just make the casserole out of the list of No Count foods and you don't have to work out any points values.

Then if you do add anything extra to it that isn't on the list, like say a bit of oil or flour then just count the extra points as a treat. Eg 1tbsp of oil for browning if needed, add 1pt (from memory). Total meal, 1pt.

Thriftlady The same principal with yoghurt if following No Count. Milk, low fat yoghurt can be eaten freely with meals so you don't have to worry how many points it is. You only count it if it is eaten as a snack and therefore a treat.

Hope this helps a little. I have never been to WW meetings but have got the books and this is how it works for me.

A typical No Count day for me would be:

    Breakfrast: Porridge/fruit & yohurt/cereal
Lunch: Non creamy OS soup & ryvitas/salad/pasta
    Dinner: Spag bog/stirfry/chilli/meat & 2 veg/pastas etc.

    Snacking: fruit, lots of it.

All OS, home made and never weighed or measured.

All for no points. Then chill out at the weekend with a couple of bottles of wine between us. I save up my treat points for this.

In the latest version of no count healthy oils are allowed (in small quantities) each day. So are avocadoes now and white rice and rice cakes have been taken off the list. They are trying to make it more GI/GL.
  • Oh have they? I've still got the original books.

Brown rice is still there though is it? So I'd be allowed a smidgen of olive oil without having to count it?
