Can I do Weightwatchers OS?

Options
I want and need to reduce my weeklys shopping bill down from £75 for 6 people, but can I do OS and weightwatcher friendly at the same time?

Husband must have a meat product with his tea and have to do 4 packed lunches a day.

trying to convince hubby i want to grow our own veggies but hes not convinced it will save much for all the hard work.

I have loads of pulses in the cupboard, i dont know what to do with them

all help would be great. want to really shift the debts this year so money saved on weekly shop can come off what we owe.

When I did Weight Watchers a couple of years back it cut my food bill by about half simply because I was cooking more food from scratch and my portion sizes drastically reduced in size making my shopping last longer.

You can get far more fresh veg from a local greengrocers than you can ready prepared/semi prepared stuff from the supermarket.

Have a look online for WW recipes - the Community boards on the WW website have some good ones that can works out pennies to make!
  • i go to my dietician at the dr surgery so no ww fee - its freee at our clinic - regulary appt, chats and advice and weigh in!!

If you do WW "No Count" then you can eat unlimited amounts from a long list of foods including lean protein, fruit, veg and carbs like spuds. That encourages you to cook from scratch using fresh ingredients. I'm not sure about counting points because I didn't follow that one.

This is one of the problems I had with my Slimming World leader when I went there. Every week she would bring in empty tins and packets (washed out I hope!) saying that this or that ready meal was Syn-free. I got tired of her relentlessly promoting junk food  I think SW itself is a good system, but I stopped going because of that one leader.

My SW leader was the same, she'd tell us to make our own maccaroni cheese by blending a tin of heinz ready made maccaroni cheese (which was sin free or low sin, can't remember which), and add some proper cheese. Sounds good except when you think how much salt is in the ready made stuff!!

Best way to do it is to make things yourself from scratch, it's taking me a while to get into the whole cooking thing properly but I'm getting there.

Are you kidding?! We didn't buy anything except fruit, meat and milk for four months over summer because we had stacks of salads, etc. It was great! This year hopefully the strawberries will produce more now they are more than a year old.

    Go for it!

I'm trying to count my points too. I've had a bash at WW No Count or Core as it's called now.

I'm not sure that 'cooking from scratch' automatically means you lose weight though:rotfl: otherwise I'd be barely there at all  I think it's cooking from scratch that has made me fat in the first place - well, no it's not the cooking it's the eating :o And of course it is what you cook that matters.

I find it very frustrating though, trying to work out points in things I've made myself like bread, yogurt, stock and anything really. There seems to be a lot of brainwork involved unless you buy everything in a packet where it's all done for you. I don't go to meetings, but from the WW magazine and the message boards on the WW site I get the impression that ready-made food is considered the norm and only way to do it.

I frankly couldn't care less how many points there are in a snack-a-jack-muller-light-laughing-cow-triangle thingy 'cos I'm never going to eat them. I want to know how many there are in a tbsp of my hm yogurt (made with semi-skimmed milk btw).

Sorry, a bit negative, but those are my thoughts :)

    What sort of pulses?

Lentils - soup or lentil dahl (you can have on its own with veg or OH can have as an accompaniment to meat curry)
Red Kidney Beans - veg chilli
Borlotti Beans - lovely soup and veggies and a little bacon
Soup mix - add to stew, with mixed veg

I am sure others will have suggestions. Take a look at the OS recipe index.

totally agree, you are what you eat. i love cooking and now i make my own cakes etc (for oh work and nibbles). i have very few low fat, slimming world friendly recipes that actually taste nice! it wouldnt be so bad if i had more recipes i could freeze once made, and defrost one each a day, but alas, i dont. things like soups, stews, potatoes, rice, pulses, pasta etc though are very cheap, filling and totally SW if teamed with 5 a day.
mumtomany -pulses: soups, stews, instead of, or as part substitution for meat, lentils are lovely with lemon juice and coriander, dried beans cooked with herby tin toms are fab. there are a fair few recipes online for flavouring pulses, which i often dip into, nice if you like the taste of pulses. x
