Morning TYO, sadly next year we won't be MF but DD will be leaving home :(

The holiday is a way of celebrating and rejoicing our family. the things we have faced together and the future - I do wax lyrical at times :o

Back from 45 mins of brisk walking with the dogs. Could keep a conversation going but only just. Maybe that was Mr Ts plan :rotfl:

Hello Tilly, popping in to say hello. Travel plans sound fabulous, and your DD leaving home is a great reason to do it now.

OH and I took six months off work to go travelling pre children, but paid for some of it by using equity in the house  (cardinal sin) - but it was totally worth it.

    Hi Tilly,

Re Tilly tidies, do you add them up each day?

Eg today I had two DDs go out, one for £xx.17 the other for £xx.20 which meant I had a pence of 63p to Tilly Tidy but.....

    I TT'd
    83p + 80p = £1.63

Is that how you do it?

I'm assuming you can understand my dreadfully worded post!!
    Mortgage at end 05/2007: £90200
    Mortgage at end 08/2018: £71646 paid £18354 (20.5%)
    MFD: :eek:Original:05/2042:eek:
    Car Finance: £8225 : £6392 (22.2% paid off)
    CC Debt (0% until 06/2020): £5640 : £4400 (21.7% paid off)

Age of Money at 31/08/2018 = 23 days

YNAB is changing the way I live my life....and spend my money!!

PLease please may I join, that tiger reserve looks stunning I want to go now ...
(does it count if next year I travel and my OH has to stay and work :D)
I know my parents got MF kicked all the kids out and now travel to the most amazing places - think the next one is back to Nepal (for about the 4th time) to look for red pandas.
I get so jealous they have seen some of what i consider the wonders of the world, travelled to countries I would love to visit, though they have yet to do Vietnam and Cambodia - but anywhere with wildlife they are off. They are a true advert for the advantages and freedom being MF gives you.

Anyway Tilly hope lodger interview goes well, fingers crossed for you, dinner sounds lovely trying to find somewhere that sells gammon as so many scrummy recipes include it.

Hi Thistle, you're worse than me :rotfl: When I check my bank first thing, I switch any pennies, and often when I check at night, I switch the pennies. Just keeps me focussed :T

I either check how much I have OPd this way on line, and add it up manually, or trawl through my posts here - would be sensible to keep a better track, but regardless my mortgage is all going south, which is my main concern :j

    Hi Tilly et al

Just having a look through here and a couple of other diaries where people are talking about growing veg etc. Just a quick question - how do you stop the birds eating everything. We have had a nightmare with them stripping the lot. I have tried hanging CD's, using tape etc to scare them but it doesn't work (they are just braver and fatter!) Netting / fencing just works out so expensive that it doesn't seem worth bothering this year. Any tips?

Hi Laura what exactly are they eating? is it things like strawberries?
i tend to grow things like carrots, onion and turnips which are root veg, i also grow salad ( which is just so expensive to buy) i havnt had a problem with birds when i have grown this kindve stuff but have netting for the strawbs etc... i got my netting really really cheap was lucky if i paid 25p for it ( shop was shutting down) maybe home bargains or something could sell it cheap though, if you just bought enough netting for the strawbs etc and grew root veg etc then it should be ok

birds can be such a pest and they tend to notice everything

hope you can get it sorted

Hi LauraJo, I have really never had a problem, although our neighbours are always feeding the birds, so maybe they are too full when they reach our garden :rotfl:

I tend to grow a wide variety in raised beds or pots - not sure if this will help but if you grow different things, maybe they are appealing to the birds more?

Cos, iceberg, cut and come again salads
Rocket, coriander, parsley, mint (in a pot)
    Broad beans, French beans, peas
    Garlic, onions
    Purple sprouting broccoli
    Potatoes (in bags)
    Carrots (in bags)
    Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries
    Apples, plums, peaches

    Good luck - Tilly

    Hi Laura

    Netting or a light fleece?

I also try and avoid stuff which is attractive to them eg. PS broccoli:mad: so root veg as elantan says..salad, potatoes.

Best of luck..I am slow getting started this year..but am planning to get down the allotment this weekend before a lovely cream tea with friends.. ( homemade!) xx

Thanks everyone. I've tried spuds and they just won't grow. Ironically I used to be able to grow them when I lived in a city but now I live somewhere rural I can't grow a thing! I've managed radishes and carrots just :o
I really want to grow salad but if its not the birds it's the slugs (why don't the birds just eat the slugs!!) Can you grow salad indoors I wonder?!
