Your poem had me in floods of tears Sazzy. I can only imagine the hurt not knowing what happened, it really upsets me that he was never found, it must be a hundred times worse for you. I too join you in hoping that he ran until he was tired and then just fell asleep peacefully.
I can't understand why in these days of terrorism, gunpowder is so easily purchased by all and sundry. Why do we even celebrate it? It was an act of treason - gunpowder- treason -and plot. Why do we allow gunpowder to be so easily accessible? The problem is, its not restricted to just bonfire night, it goes on before and after then for months. I also wish the supermarkets wouldn't do the buy one get one free deals, then you get the pop up shops too. Limit fireworks to organised displays if we must have them, don't let the public buy them, make them licensed and only for Bonfire night and New Year. Even that would be too many times but better than for the months we have to have them for now.
I really feel for the homeless animals or the ones whose owners still send them out and the wildlife, they don't know what is going off, have no one to keep them safe and comfort them. Bless them all and keep them safe. xx

Last year our mini Schnauzer wasn't bothered at all by the fireworks.he was only a few months old then though. This year is a different story altogether.he's been absolutely petrified. First couple of nights he was shaking and panting heavily, but now he's just barking non stop at every bang. He also seems to have taken a dislike to the dark. As soon has it starts to get dark he seems to start worrying and pacing about. Hes constantly looking out of the window ,waiting for the firework to start:(

Instead of wasting your time arguing with a supermarket manager and haranguing shoppers, why not contact https://www.change.org and start a petition - e.g. calling for a ban on firework sales except to legitimate organisations, or restricting firework displays to Nov. 5 or Saturday before/after, which could be presented to your MP or handed in to Downing St.

Hi Lin, There is a petition with change.org-which I sign every single year- but it never quite reaches its target unfortunately. The campaign is slowly gaining momentum, unfortunately some people think it's a violation of theit human rights to let off gunpowder in their back gardens..

    I don't think I've seen this, although I do get sign-this-petition e-mail requests from change.org about 5 times a week.

The fireworks annoy me too...and I've signed the petition as well.

I live on an estate and from the time that fireworks go on sale until after New Year, it sounds like I'm living in a war zone regardless of the weather. Also, local kids decide it's fun to let fireworks off at random times and often in the middle of the night. I've even had a firework thrown under my car which went off as I drove home. Scared me to death and very dangerous.

I have 2 cats and it terrifies them and it seems to get worse for them every year.

Violation of their human rights...what about violation of our human rights?

Sorry, just needed to have a rant as I sit here listening to yet another lot of fireworks close by.

Well Ruars, its been 5 long years since you took fright and disappeared. I still think of you and your poor family such a lot especially at this time of year. We have had fireworks going off for around a month. In fact we often have them at other times as there is a country park hotel nearby which has weddings and celebrations, they are often letting off fireworks throughout the year.
You had so many people on here and facebook routing for you to find your way back home. We all hoped that you had found somewhere safe to be and was happy. None of us will ever know where you did end up and what you were doing but I hope that whatever it was you were happy and safe. If you found yourself living somewhere else, I hope they loved you as much as your family did, they missed you so much.
God bless you Ruars, where ever you are, keep safe and be happy until your family join you. xxx

Thank you DD. We're still fighting to have fireworks banned for private sale. Long journey but I truly believe we WILL get there! Tonight, me and the two dogs are snugged up under the duvet with our candle burning for all the lost furbabies. Xx

Hi Sazzy, I sign every petition going for the banning of fireworks, I wish the government would listen. If the ordinary man in the street was stopped and had a packet of gunpowder, they would be in trouble, yet gunpowder is openly sold in fireworks. Doesn't make sense to me. We are celebrating an act of treason for goodness sake.
I love watching fireworks but still campaign to have them banned. Not even really happy about organised displays, they still cause all the noise etc but at least there could be a ruling that events could only take place bonfire night and New Year instead of a random ones a month before and three months afterwards.
I help raise funds for our local nature reserve and last year the council came to us with plans to have a firework display on the nature reserve as it was the largest open space available!! What were they thinking of???? Its a nature reserve for a reason, its a sanctuary for wildlife, part of a wildlife corridor leading down to a bigger country park. Its bad enough that the public often choose to go and let fireworks off without permission but to have allowed the council (it is actually land which is owned by them) to have an official firework display would have opened up the floodgates for all and sundry to think it was ok. I have never seen so many of our members turn up to oppose the idea. They didn't have their display anywhere in the end.
I feel so sorry for wildlife/strays/horses/farm animals etc who have nowhere to get out of the way of the noise.
Did you hear about that poor horse that had to be put down a couple of weeks or so ago? Its field was near some holiday cottages and the holidaymakers decided to let fireworks off in the field above the one the horse was in. He took fright and careered around his field and ran into a barbed wire fence, injuring his canon bone, tendons etc. There was nothing the vets could do for him as he was in so much pain, he had to be put down. His owners were devastated obviously. If the holiday makers had let them know, they could have moved him to another field. They just didn't think.

The sooner they ban the blooming things the better. Or have the silent ones like they have a Yorkshire wildlife park, they have firework displays which don't have the frightening bangs. There is still the lighting up of the sky but that isn't as bad as the bangs.

Anyway, thinking of you Sazzy and poor Ruars bless him. xx
  • It's strange how certain threads stick in your mind and yours, Sazzybum came to mind tonight as I gave the beagle his walk.

We tend to walk him in a park that's been created from reclaimed land....people do go up there in daylight hours & when it's dry but this time of year it's only the hardened dog walkers that use it in the dark but guess who used it last year?

Yes that's right people setting off fireworks.

The Government won't restrict the sale of fireworks in case they 'offend' those who celebrate Diwali and the Chinese New Year

    https://www.gov.uk/fireworks-the-law

You can only buy fireworks (including sparklers) from registered sellers for private use on these dates:

    15 October to 10 November
    26 to 31 December
3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year

At other times you can only buy fireworks from licensed shops.

I don't see why you need to be able to buy them as early as 15 October or after 5 November.

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places.

You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for:

Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight
New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am

It is impossible to police this as often you cannot identify who set it iff or exactly where, by the time someone reports it and police can attend the culprit will be long gone and no evidence as to who it was.

But the Government always state there are sufficient laws in place

    https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/109702

We are aware that fireworks can cause distress to animals. Restrictions on the general public’s use of fireworks, and permitted noise levels, already exist and we have no plans to extend them.

There is a fireworkss abatement campaign on Facebook that you can join

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/FireworkABatement/

there is now an online form to fill out to report any and all fireworks to be logged that I believe can be used without you needing to sign up. If you hear fireworks past the curfew (not allowed between 11pm-7am) please report them to the police and get a log number, this can then be included on the form and added to the tallies.

Maybe perseverance will pay off eventually.
