As I understand it, asking for other offences to be taking into consideration means that those other offences count as having been dealt with, and the police won't come knocking at his door the following week to arrest him for them, if that makes sense. That's all I know about it though...

Great news - well done to the police, lets hope the courts throw the book at them (can only hope)

sadly in this case "throw the book at them" will likely mean a £100 fine (which if they are on the dole likely wont be paid) and 50 hours community service which they wont turn up for.As for the OP who the mirrors were stolen off she will do well to get her own mirror covers back.

Hopefully, the police will do what the police in Cheadle Hulme did some years ago when they apprehended a bunch of kids who stole hundreds of car badges. They retrieved hundreds of the badges from their homes and had them on a large table in the police station and motorists where invited to come along and if they had any that had been stolen, they were allowed to take home the appropriate badge if it was present. I got back a set of two Spitfire IV badges that had been nicked from my Triumph's rear flankes and one from the bonnet.

Can the court insist the cost of replacement covers is paid by the thieves?

Possibly, I'm not sure. I've certainly read in the local papers courts ordering X amount compensation.

However the OP can simply file a civil claim against him. If he has no money bailiffs will come and take his nice plasma TV. :p If he has no TV, it'll ruin his credit record with a CCJ. May not get the mirrors back but will hopefully inconvenience him.

    Just found this
    1. Criminal Compensation Orders
You may of course not need to resort to civil action to receive compensation. If the offender is convicted, a criminal court can order he or she pay you compensation for any injury, loss or damage that you suffered because of the offence.
In order to receive compensation this way, however, you must tell the police and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) about the losses and harm you have suffered. The police and CPS will then ask you to document your losses, in much the same way as you would before a civil trial (see above), and present this information to the court on your behalf.
Before it determines whether or not compensation is appropriate, the court will take a look at the offender's financial position and ability to pay. If the court decides the offender has sufficient means, it will order him/her to compensate the victim.

Yeah 50 pence a month will be a great help to the OP.

Somehow cant see any compo coming my way. He wont admit to stealing the original £100 covers so all I can get him for is the £25ish plain black replacements because simply that is all we have evidence of him doing. Local Police have just released this:

Am i getting mixed up but if he's asking for 11 others to be taken into consideration, how can he only plead guilty to yours? or have the plod asked him to take the rap for a few others, they clear up their backlog and he gets a slap on the wrists?

Basically, they get sentenced for the one crime you have pinned on them, and ask for various others to be taken into consideration.
In other words, they get less sentence for admitting to 200 other thefts than they would if they were just convicted for the one
    It's very common with burglars.
It's a way for the govt to claim clear ups and make their crime figures look better
