Non of these Energy monitors offer the same level of accuracy as the Electricity Meter in your property. Open one of these devices up and you'll find many of the components used to measure the energy usage have a bog standard 5% tolerance - so thats a potential 5% swing in the results / calculations straight away - a precision measuring device will have at least 0.01% tolerance precision electronic components within them, and occasionally even finer, and they will always be calibrated, i've yet to see any of these devices carry calibration certification.

There is absolutely no way, that something mass produced for as little as £5 OEM price, can produce results which can be deemed accurate in any way, shape or form. They give some novelty value granted, and they indicate the presence of something 'running' but I wouldn't be budgeting based on them, you have access to a far more accurate device by way of your Electricity meter, and why not use it?, since effectively you already pay for it through a percentage of your standing charge - seems daft to buy a 2nd something which offers a less degree of accuracy when you already pay for the presence of a calibrated device in your property. This is a money saving forum after all, so personally i'd be sticking with reading the Electricity meter and putting the £20+ cost of one of these devices towards my next bill!. When you are struggling to pay the bills, that £20 buys some warmth in winter!.
Being able to see power used immediately as an appliance is turned on is handy!
Being able to see if the power when you're about to go to bed is not at the normal level is also useful, as it means you've left something on.
In addition one particular flaw i've noticed in some models is the slow update / refresh rate, often problems with signal, interferance from wireless devices on a similar frequency or just lack of design quality, means that an appliance can switch off, and the monitor still be showing the full appliance usage for some minutes after, until it eventually refreshes / re-establishes a signal, which of course lead to the monitor incorrectly adding the consumption of an appliance to the total running amount for far longer than it was actually physically running for, making the reading even more inaccurate.

Given the high consumption of appliances such as heaters, immersions etc, over a period of time this 'phantom' usage can mount up to quite a significant amount, indicating that more usage has been recorded than is factual.

The only surefire way of monitoring your daily / weekly / monthly usage is to read the very device which is used to create your bills!.

So we'll agree to disagree on this one. :)

  • I've been waiting 10 months for them to send me a &^%$(*&^ gas bill! They can stick this piece of tat up their derrieres.
I thought I was the only EDF customer to not get a gas bill for 10 months so its good to know I am not alone :T
However I have not received the pin badge so now I feel totally worthless :p

EDF are also sponsoring the Olympic Games 2012. I wonder how much that is costing us.
  • Ooo, ooo, ooo, I just got my pin today. How excited was I!!! Especially as they inform me I am one of a select few... Are they taking the **** or what?
Seriously, I just can't believe the rubbish this company is coming out with. After they dumped the Nectar reward points scheme which actually came in handy, they informed they would be replacing it with something better... and here we are with this "Thankyous" BS! A pin! I get a pin! Oh and a chance to buy a half-price meal deal for 40 odd quid! They tell me I'll be receiving a plastic card each month with a winning number. How much is this costing me in the long run???
And yesterday I learned from Freinds of the Earth just what is going on behind the doors of EDF: foe.co.uk/what_we_do/final_demand2_32882.html?ref=home-tab-1
    I honestly despair!

Yep - I got a pin badge from them today and a card offering all sort of winnings - which has translated into 50% off some discount card scheme and a 2 for 1 offer at some tourist attractions.

Been with EDF for nearly a year and not yet got online access to my Online Saver 7 account!!

They need to sort their systems out before wasting my money on tat and advertising.

They better be competitive when the Online Saver ends or I'm off!

All I got was a letter telling me my online saver 7 is finishing and they are putting me onto their standard tariff. Time to change!

Have any customers actually contacted EDF to let them know exactly what the general feeling is about their Thankyous promotion?

I seem to remember that one of the threads on here gave a direct link to the MD;)

Is this the same EDF that's just been fined 1.5 millions Euros for spying on Greenpeace? Oh dear..........

Got my next summer's must-have item (Yes it does say that!) this morning. Also amused by the bit that tells you what to do if you don't get a monthly bill. Better login to thankyous then.....

edit: 2 for 1 entry at theme parks many miles away. (I'm single and don't have any kids) and same as suzie_q discounted membership for something I've never heard of.
