Not sure, but according to some people you can pour boiling water on it, put a lid on the pan and leave it off the heat. Indeed, I was seduced into buying a plastic pot with a lid in a charity shop recently, which claimed to work this way. DS1 says it doesn't.

Possibly those putting it in the pan bring it up to boiling first.

So, some creative suggestions: do you have any bulgar wheat? That just needs boiling water. Or wraps.

If not, do you have a slow cooker? If you do, the 'no heat' method MIGHT work better, if you boil the kettle, pour contents into slow cooker and turn it on, boil kettle again, empty first lot of water from slow cooker, add pasta and boiling water, put lid on and pray for 20 minutes. I'm thinking that might work better than the plastic pot did because of the additional insulation.

Best of luck ... please do report back!

  • bmot; I know that tonight's dinner is done, but for future reference I put my pasta in a wide mouth food flask - pour boiling water over it and leave for 10 mins or so. If doing this though, mind and leave enough room for the pasta to swell.

  • I caught the end of some programme last night on the box.

It showed gold leaf being stirred into some kind of wine preparation. Apparently something to do with a typical Henry VIIIth type tudor feast. The whole thing looked fascinating.

Does anyone know which programme/channel this was? I was called away and the channel was changed so I don't know where to look. I would love to be able to find out whether it's due to be shown again at some time.

It may be The Tudors on BBC2 every friday night from 9pm to 10pm....
  • Or it may have been the series that sue perkins and some guy did. It was called the supersizes go..... They covered lots of different times periods such as regency and tudor.

    Hi there,
Hope this is the correct place to post.
Got some black pudding in a reduced breakfast pack and was wondering if it would be ok to try DS with some (he is 15 months) ?
    Any thoughts appreciated!
