I've sacked the window cleaner- at £8 every 4 weeks (even in winter!) Its too expensive for little reward. I have a 3 storey house (no he didn't do all the windows either!) so I can't get to the top windows. So heres ny question- do those magnetic window cleaners work? I saw some copies on ebay - are these any good? The Window wizards are £30! I guess if I used them for 4 months I'd get my moneys worth iyswim. Thanks!

  • I'm trying to be more OS but am finding that I'm using up my supply of tupperware pretty fast now that I'm freezing things. I know some of you OS folks use old margerine cartons etc but DH would think I had finally looped the loop if I did this (he's coming along, but slowly!) so I was wondering if anyone can suggest where you get tupperware type containers, around 0.5/0.75l capacity, reasonably cheap. ideally microwave, dishwasher and (of course) freezer safe? Cheers.

I'm with viticella's OH (hope I got name right) on this.

If you have a favourite size tupperware, bung the stuff you are freezing into a food bag and put the bag into the tupperware. Freeze. Once frozen, remove bag from tupperware and you will have a lovely square (or whatever) frozen meal to replace in freezer. Wash tupperware and repeat process! :T
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

I've tried this and the bag has ended up expanding when frozen and being completely stuck in the dish/tub!! Did I do something wrong????

If I am making large quantities of pasta sauce, mince and onions (base for future recipes), soup etc, I put it in a large roasting dish and freeze until semi solid. Then I tip it out on to a board and with a large sharp knife cut it into portion sized blocks. These are then put into thin 'fruit and veg' poly bags and then all are packed into larger freezer bags or even carrier bags and put back in freezer. These 'blocks' will fit in with very little wasted space and you can take out as many portions as you need.

Not as trendy as Tupperware but more O/S and space efficient.

I've been around for just over a year, and I don't understand that either - why someone should thank me for wittering on about what I'm having for lunch or how much ironing I've got is beyond me :rotfl: Maybe it's a way of just saying 'hi there' :) I just say 'morning everyone at the beginning of my post.

When it's happened to me, I've interpreted it as "thanks for making me laugh" or just "enjoyed that post", the equivalent of smiling, nodding and "uhuhs" in ordinary face to face conversation.

    We're just a friendly lot!

Another one - a bit differrent I think... I bought a small bag of rice pudding rice to make rice pudding. Made some, and don't like it... what can I do with my rice pudding rice now?

Probably best for making risotto with, or good for eating with any dish you'd normally have long grain rice with. It be less attractive because the grains will stick together, but it'll taste fine.
  • I recently got a yoghurt maker from Freecycle. I've followed the instructions (boil and cool full fat milk, add Yeo valley natural yoghurt, leave in the maker). However, after 3 hours it doesn't appear to be setting properly.

It's like thick, curdled milk, rather than smooth yoghurt

Am I being impatient, or am I doing something wrong?

    Many thanks, Penny. x

I used to make yoghourt overnight in a thermos. It would often separate like that, but I found stirring it made it look just like bought stuff, so I assume that's what they do in the factories. Bear in mind that making yoghourt is like making bread - the active ingredient, lactilobacillus, is sensitive to heat, so the process will take longer in a cool kitchen than in a warm one.

If you find that the HM yoghourt is too thin and runny for your taste, then you have two choices. You can either simmer the milk until the volume has reduced by one third (i.e. to two-thirds of the original volume) - this is the traditional way and what most of the recipes in indian cookery books recommend.

Alternatively you can whisk dried milk powder to the milk before you begin making the yoghourt. I used to add about 4 dessert spoonfuls of skimmed dried milk powder to about a pint and a half of milk (or to put it another way: exactly one thermos-full :D .) I guess full-fat milk powder would be fine, but be aware that a lot of 'full-fat' milk powder is what the manufacturers call 'filled powder' - i.e. the milk fat has been skimmed off to make cream or butter, and replaced with vegetable fat. I'm not sure how well the lactilobaccillus would get on with that 'alien' fat.

Ethansmum a friend has those magnetic ones and says he's sending them back as they are useless. Not magnetic enough. Suppose it's worth a try if you want to see for yourself.

Plastic tubs The ones you get in the takeaways £1 shops sell and someone said Instore do them too. 10 for £1 and they do me fine. I do hae an Ikea set somewhere, several sizes was £1.49. Tescos also do a range of different size plastics.
One day I might be more organised...........
