I started leaving the sugar out and it was fine ... you could certainly cut it down.

  • The scientist in me is telling me that yeast needs sugar to work but i am sure there will be other suggestions for you - just not from me!

Me, too  However, I asked this same question last year and the consensus was that sugar (and salt) aren't as necessary as I was taught in cookery lessons (about 100 years ago ;) ). I experimented reducing the sugar and salt in recipes gradually, and have halved it with no ill effects.

    Hello peeps!
Can anyone let me know if I can freeze green finger chillies? Just I brought a bag yesterday, used some but have loads left...and certainly don't want to bin them!!!
Do you think it will be ok to pop them in the freezer and then defrost them when needed?
    Ta :)

I have a quick breadmaker query. I have the panasonic that doesn't have the raisin dispenser. I'm keen to try one of the raisin breads - anyone any idea roughly how far into the cycle the beep goes for the raisins? Five hours is a long time to hang around waiting to see :)

Has anyone ever deep fried vegetables (im thinking carrots, butternut squash and sweet potato) like chips? Ive roasted them before, but never deep fried, and wondered how they would turn out!!!???

I've done everything one can do to potatoes to sweet potatoes and other HARD root crops like carrots, yam and parsnips. All fully successful, but sometimes the product is ott, so it's good to mix the roots (eg mashed/creamed sweet potato/carrot is WONderful).

Not sure though about softer veg like squash....

    Hi

I've frozen chillies before (although I chopped them beforehand) and they were fine.

  • I've just been through all my cupboard (inspired by the storecupboard thread) to make an inventry of the stupid amount of food that we've got kicking about...I've found an open half full jar of Autumn Chutney that my Mum made in August 2007. It hasn't been stored in the fridge but the lid was on tight...do you think it's still OK? Would be lovely with crackers and cheese...:p .

    TIA.
