Idiophreak wrote:Hmm, actually, I bought the gf a Bravissimo voucher for xmas and they always ask for your address in there to see if you get their book or not. When I bought the voucher she said it was linked into the persons account and that if they lost it the computer system could be used to issue another one.
I certainly believed the woman - and I'd already given my gf's postcode etc, so I don't see what reason they'd have for lying about it at that point...
As far as I am aware (and I am certainly not an expert) one does not have to give an address unless purchasing a TV or other TV receiving device (Maybe) or unless one is purchasing a warranty with the product one is buying. (Any experts are urged to correct me if I'm wrong  )

Asking for an address for refunds is also the shops way of trying to detect/prevent theft by their own staff; to prevent them pocketing money from refunds that haven't actually occured. I have been increasingly asked for my address on these occasions and politely tell them they should find another way of preventing staff theft than asking for my details!
I had a particularly nasty encounter with a lady in one shop where we bought some items and two of them had been overcharged at the till. We pointed this out to lady on said till, and in the manner of "Computer says no...." (cue david walliams) she told us to go to customer services for the refund.......
15 mins later in the queue at customer services we get to the head....explained problem, had to call the manager twice to sort it, and then she had the cheek to ask for name and address, for a !!!! up they made!!!
I refused....she refused money..manager again...I refused, he said he couldn't give me the money unless I provided it.........Lo an behold the angel of the lord came down (it was xmas) and the manager relented, ......when i wrote "'X' marks the spot." :A0 -

How does that stop staff theft?
I mean, a staff member is hardly likely to put their own address down if they were doing a dodgy refund.0 -
In the days when cheques were used far more frequently than Credit Cards, many shops had the habit of asking you to put your address on the back of the cheque.
I used to take great delight in refusing. Quite a few times 'The Manager' would be summoned, usually by me, and I would always get the same answer, "it's just in case there is anything wrong with the cheque". I would then get them to read the wording on the cheque guarantee card and ask them where it said that I had to put my address on the back.
It was obvious that most of them actually had NEVER read what it said on the card because most shops used to ask you to put the guarantee card number on the cheque yourself. Strictly speaking, if you did, the cheque was no longer guaranteed.
Nowadays, they seem to want your 'phone number more than anything.
