You have to give a postcode. You do not have to give your postcode.0

phill79 wrote:Yes, but how will giving the shop your post code confirm you have a tv licence?
They (TV Licencing) can't even work out that you have a licence if you give the exact same address when renewing but change the name on it (ie, got married).
TV license people don't work on names. They work on addresses.
The license for us is in the missus' name. We aren't married. I bought a gogglebox a couple of months ago. Supplied my name and address and got a letter from the Licensing people wanting to know if I had one. I rang them up and argued the to$$ about my details being passed on. I told them that if they spent a couple of minutes searching they'd see there is a license registered at the address. They then told me that because the name I provided the shop and the name they have registered as having a license don't match then they have to check. Their reasoning was the name they have could be a previous tenant
The shops, by law, have to inform them if they sell any equipment capable of receiving. The company is liable for a grand fine for each one they fail to reportThis country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0 -
I had an argument with TV Licence people. When I divorced, despite umpteen letters, they were unable to change my name back to my maiden name, so the licence remained in the name of Mrs W.
My TV broke down just before Christmas, and as a surprise gift, my parents bought me a new one, and Dad had given my name to the shop as Miss H.
It took months of trying to convince TV Licencing that Mrs W and Miss H were the same person, and therefore they did not need a TV Licence each for the same TV
Hubby recently got asked for his post code when buying a £4 pair of slippers in Brantanno. He refused to give it and the lady got a little huffy, but she couldn't explain why she needed a postcode to sell him slippers and he refused to give it.Here I go again on my own....0 -

it doesnt matter what you buy from comet, they always ask your name and address. i mean, i bought a washer/dryer, they still asked for the info, how can i get a tv signal on that? (answers on a postcard please....)
i must admit though, when they did ask for my name, "gentlepurr" was out of my mouth before i'd realised i'd said it:rotfl: .
beccles, i had similar probs with tv license, they wouldnt change my tv license from ex's name to mine. it ended up with the detector man presenting himself on my doorstep. it was proved i was in the right, but i still got a nasty letter a month later suggesting i paid monthly in future, and was lucky i hadnt been fined £1000! still having an ongoing battle with them now.

I got asked for my name, full address and phone number when I bought my Dad a mobile phone last year from Phones4U.
I wouldn't give my postcode so the fella got stroppy and said he couldn't sell it to me without one. I asked him why and he said they just needed one.
Told him I didn't want my details going on their database and he promised me that it wouldn't be used for anything. (So what do they need them for?!)
Then he told me that he needed it incase they had any offers to send me through the post - after explaining again the phone WASN'T for me so why would I be interested in their offers and him contradicting himself by saying they wouldn't be used for anything at all, he reluctantly sold it to me.
Pain in the ruddy backside.....I just want to go into a shop, choose what I want and pay for it, not have to stand telling all and sundry in the shop what my details are!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I had to give my details when buying an xbox, even though I claimed it was a gift for someone else.
Needless to say, I got a bit confused when giving my detailsWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
I've had similar problems with TV licencing, a few years ago for some reason we had a tv license without the reference number on it properly, they kept sending letters asking if we had one, I replied with every number I could find on the thing. In the end a blokey turned up just before we were moving and asked to see it, obviously it was packed away, the bloke could see we were moving as there were boxes everywhere but he caustioned me anyway. Made me feel like a criminal because of their incompetence. In the end I had to look through the boxes to find it and post it to them. Not a happy bunny. Surely they could have just checked that the person who purchased the previous one had also payed for one this year! I've also had the new equipment problem and again had to call them at my expense saying a license was registered in so-and-sos name not mine! A problem easily solved if their system alowed you to have multiple names on the license.
I find that they generally ask for address when you return things which is annoying.0 -

If they are required by law to take your address for licensing or whatever, then shouldn't they be asking for proof of address? Otherwise you could give a fake address so what's the point?
When they ask for my address to give me a refund on something it makes my blood boil. But you end up spending so long arguing with them if you refuse, I find it easier just to give them a fake address.0
