IHubby recently got asked for his post code when buying a £4 pair of slippers in Brantanno. He refused to give it and the lady got a little huffy, but she couldn't explain why she needed a postcode to sell him slippers and he refused to give it.

They asked the postcode to see how far people are traveling to the store for market research , they dont need your housenumber had the same at Brantano the other week and that was the reason given, also got asked at Woolies for the same reason a couple of years back

I bought a Camcorder from Jessops last week and got asked my name and address.
I asked the guy why he needed it and he said it was for the guarantee and would enable them to find my details and proof of purchase if I lost my receipt.
    Seems reasonable.

THIS IS NOT TRUE............This is what staff are told, believe me there are many things which you can use to prove when you bought an item such as the warranty card you got with it, your bank statement and even the model number on the product. YOU DO NOT NEED TO GIVE YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS WHEN YOU ARE BUYING SOMETHING FROM A SHOP OR ANYWHERE ELSE.

READ MY LIPS. YOU DO NOT NEED TO OK !

  • Don't know why people get so humpty about giving out addressed when purchasing goods. As some have said, for TV licenseing any equipment that could get a TV signal needs to be referenced. Other reasons are for guarentees which I don't mind giving out. It's not as though they'd do anything exciting with it, I get enough junk mail anyway so what difference does 1 extra flyer make?

Besides, it's easy enough to find peoples names and addresses anyway using the internet and thinks such as phone books and the electoral roll. I could probably find half the posters on here's name and address and they could probably do the same with me if they knew where to look for it (all legal, I hasten to add)

I get very little junk mail, but I don't give out my address unless essential.

  • PC World demanded my name and address when I bought a Sat Nav ( Why?) I refused and they had to get the manager to approve the sale!

I never give personal details to shop staff. In fact I give out very little personal info at all to any one especially websites!. I have loads of registrations as Charlie Brown of Alabama...:rotfl:

I do get heartily sick of being asked daily in my local mini supermarket if I have a loyalty card. I am a regular, they KNOW me by sight and the answer is always the same and always will be. Obviously No is hard to remember!
  • i know it's slightly different but when i took a toy back to toys r us without my reciept they asked for my bank card or driving license. i had neither and then she demanded my national insurance number. told her where to get off and then demanded my car reg number. also refused to give out my phone number and she said unless i gave some details i couldn't have a refund. apparently it's incase they later find out the toy was stolen, so they can trace you

I have heard that some companies will ask for detail to identify you if you are bringing items back for refunds as they try to spot serial offenders for doing so. Not commenting on the rights and wrongs of this, merely offering another possible reason why it is done.

    THIS IS NOT TRUE...

Hmm, actually, I bought the gf a Bravissimo voucher for xmas and they always ask for your address in there to see if you get their book or not. When I bought the voucher she said it was linked into the persons account and that if they lost it the computer system could be used to issue another one.

I certainly believed the woman - and I'd already given my gf's postcode etc, so I don't see what reason they'd have for lying about it at that point...

I've taken a few things back to Focus (DIY place) in the past couple of months, mainly because whatever I got was the wrong size (washing machine hose, drill bit (unused), broom (the handle didn't fit the head!)) and they've asked me for my address every time. I've given it, but wonder if there'll come a point when they log how much I take back (legitimately) and refuse to give me any more refunds?
