If anyone has been having trouble buying biotex, I have just noticed that Netto will have 250g boxes for 1.00 on Monday. :D
  • I made up some gloop using essential oils, my clothes are super clean and soft, even chefs whites, but they smell???
I'm wasing at 40 degrees, is this too low?

  • Just used the last of my Borax. The substitute now available is indeed a mixture of washing soda crystals ( which are in the gloop recipe any way ) and baking soda, AKA sodium bicarbonate. Just feeling very pleased, managed to get a 3kg bag for £2.95 at the large Chinese supermarket. It sells to trade, but anyone can go in there. Big out of town wareouse. It is worth checking your yellow pages. Very chuffed I don't have to pay postage for internet purchase, or diesel to get there, as we were out that way in any case.

I made my first two batches of gloop yesterday using the soap and washing soda recipe, but unfortunately I used the instructions on another thread and poured it into 5 litre washing liquid bottles. Now I have two bottles of soap jelly and it's almost impossible to get the stuff out of them. I have resorted to adding boiling water to one of them and stirring it with a stick in the hopes it will stay more liquid. Does anyone have a better suggestion to deal with the second bottle please?
  • I've been using a modified recipe, using liquid soap flakes and soda crystals - the great thing is it's just the same as gloop, but it always stays in a liquid so no undissolved bits get stuck anywhere and I can use bottles to store it without it going solid. I can just pour it straight into one of those detergent ball thingys and bung it into the machine with the clothes. I also add laundry oxygen bleach in the drawer if I'm washing whites but dont add this to the gloop for storage as it will release a gas. I would definitely recommend trying this recipe if anyone is having any problems with regular gloop. I buy my liquid soap flakes from the laundry aisle of Tesco, but I've seen them in Waitrose too.
  • I understand that it works in exactly the same way as normal borax. I believe that borax has been withdrawn from sale but I'm not clear on exactly what the reason was

It was because borates (of which borax is one) were reclassified by the EU as poisonous. The borax substitute stuff is fine for laundry and cleaning but not for killing ants etc.

I have read this and the cold water washing thread with great interest and have hopefully found a solution to the main problem I have with doing my washing.

I live on a boat and the thought of emptying soap powders, liquids and fabric conditioner into the river when I have done my washing quite upsets me to the point I have to take all my washing to the launderette. Which is uber uber pricy!!!

Could anyone tell me if the ingredients of the home made powder or the gloop would be harmful to the wildlife in the river?

Would be fab to know the answer.

    Thank you All :A
  • I believe that all soaps and detergents contain high levels of phosphates and that's not good for fish. Please don't quote me on that as I'm not up on my chemistry but what I do know is that where friends used to live on a lake in the US they banned kitchen and bathroom water draining back into the lake because it was having an effect on the fish and plant-life.
