Don't throw food away challenge

Really want to give this a go, as I like to challenge myself to use up leftovers etc in various ways anyway, but I've noticed just lately I've been slipping a lot and throwing things out more
One thing I've always done is make myself a Japanese-style bento lunch for work - this is a great way to use up leftovers and other bits of salads/veggies etc because of the varieties of small food that go into making these lunches. That, and they tend to look rather pretty so make me happy at lunch timelol. Definitley going to get back into doing these more often again, and also doing a lunchbox for my partner to take to work everyday now he has a locker to keep it in
Will definitely make more use of the freezer too, especially with Xmas coming up in a few days, everyone always makes too much food eh? I'll be making use of whatever is left!
I dread to think what I currently throw away, so not sure what to make my target, maybe no more than £3 between now and January, and will judge next month as it comes0 -

Daughter...? Discipline! get the whip out!
If she takes it she eats it. If she leaves it she doesn't get anything else until she HAS eaten it. You'll have a battle royal or two until she gets the idea that wasting food like that is simply not on. Alternatively... dock her pocket money by the cost of what she wasted (or at least threaten to, at the start)... She's not likely to learn the lesson until in some way or other it impacts on her personally. You just need to find the way

Well, so far today hasn't gone great, first day into my little mini challenge leading up to the new year and I've already had to throw out a few clementines (35p) and half a tin of baked beans that I forgot was in the fridge (14p)
Bad times! Keeping a much closer watch on things now though, determined to make this a permanent change eventually!

I'm loving this thread. I'm actually very good with using up leftovers/veg etc but I've learnt stuff just by reading the last few pages! I will properly join in at end of Jan cos I will be moving house mid Jan so will have a fresh start then. Hopefully I will save even more money!

Morning all
Ok so am not doing tooooo bad - now fully recovered from dodgy tummy the other week, so am pretty back to normal.
Anyway have thrown away recently 2 sprouts (dog totally refused to eat them,I did try) but they were from a huge bag reduced at the local garden centre to 55p - so probably 1p worth.
Just thrown away remainder of a little tub of soured cream that was wearing more fur that Cruella d'Ville -20p I suppose (it was meant for todays jacket spuds so really cross now)
"Tommies" or "dockers" as we call them - We eat them! Best bit about bread- especially if you are doing something on toast otherwise I use them to make croutons or blitz them for breadcrumbs.

Well we're off for a week so have cleared the fridge in readiness - managed to freeze some bread, and also thought I'd try freezing some lower fat creme fraiche rather than chucking it.
However I did chuck some left over veg which we didn't get round to reusing (only a small amount, so I'll call it 20p) and about a quarter of a tub of coleslaw (having already used as much as possible in sandwiches for our packed lunches), so that's about 25p.
I've forgotten what my total was before, but I know it was low, so I think I'm at around 75p for the month.
I'm absolutely flabbergasted - I know it's usually a lot higher than that, but this thread is making a real difference to my spending and cooking habits, and all for the better!0 -
had bubble and squeak for dinner last night.....remainders of solstice dinner with some cabbage and onion added
had some for breakfast this morning too....lush with brown sauce :T will finish it off by the end of today so absolutely no waste at all from the solstice meal.....got to be a first!! :j

Morning all
The expensive bit of Christmas starts here!
If your family is anything like mine was (way back in olden times - so far back that if my mum and dad had got divorced... she would have got the cave!) the kids have already had you up for hours and there are half eaten sweets, nuts and chocolate bars scattered about the place, not to mention being hidden behind cushions or trodden into the carpet...
And it's going to get worse!
Heh heh
