Don't throw food away challenge

Just spotted this thread and hoping one of you lovely people can help. I try very hard not to throw food away but we are away for Christmas and I have a cauliflower, some broccoli and 5 muller rice's which won't last until we get back.
How do I freeze the veg (sorry never needed to do this before) and can I freeze the muller rice's at all as they are not cheap!?
Thanks, hope to hear from some of you soon0 -
Hello all,
I said £1.00 earlier.
I have to confess to three eggssorry sorry sorry. I know they don't go bad overnight and I know I could do the float test, but I just can't bear the thought of bad eggs.
I could also have planned better and made sure I used them.
So, what shall I say £1.20 for a box of eggs. 20p each = 60p
£1.60 up to now then.0 -
The best way to freeze veg like that is to blanch it first (pop in boiling water for a couple of minutes, then rinse in cold water). But it's not essential, if you're feeling lazy - it just defrosts better if you do.
I'd probably cook them and then cover with a cheesy sauce and freeze the whole lot, but we like our veg gratins.
Never tried freezing muller rices, but I'd say go for it, and tell us what you think when they defrost. I can't see why it wouldn't work.0 -
ive done so badly
i havent been on here for over a month (had to change internet providers)
ive thrown so much food away it isnt even funnyreally shocking
had a clear out in the fridge a few days ago .... it was so embarrasing im not even gonna tell you what i threw away
about half a black bag ( a LARGE black bag)
end of december will be better .... january will be perfect!! im determined to do this0 -
This thread is fantastic and so inspiring! I have frozen the muller rice's and blanched and frozen the cauliflowers (had 2??) and the small amount of broccoli.
Does 'rehoming' food count in the costings? My Dad came over tonight and took the 3 tins of Baxters Leek & Potato soup that we didn't like the taste of?
Also, we use two loaves of bread every week and always throw away the 'tommies' (top and bottom) of the bread - what can I do with this instead of throwing it away?
Definately going to try and not throw anything away (try to be good already but could do much better) next year - will be great to see how well we can all do, problem is going to be 14 year old DD, who will quite often take something to eat, have one mouthful and decide it isn't actually what she wants!!! grrrrrrrrrr0 -
Please can I join in? We live in the middle of nowhere so I shop once a week and I seem to throw away a criminal amount of veg, even though we feed some to the guinea pigs and the composter in the garden!!
I think a chest freezer might be the answer as I have a 2 drawer freezer which is pretty inadequate, so 2012 will be my year of much less waste. Wish me luck.

Have had to throw away a few bits - some bread that went stale, and I think some satsumas will be for the bin tomorrow since I can't really eat 8 in a day and we're away over Christmas. Will be costing it up tomorrow, but I should be around £1 in total I think.February Grocery Challenge - £100.87/£180February Don't Throw Food Away Challenge - £0.60/£1.500

Rehoming food ... I love it
It's up to you if you want to call it waste. One the one hand - you paid for it but ain't gonna eat it... but on the other hand - it isn't in your rubbish bin. Your call - but personally I'd not count it as waste
Tommies can be made into bread crumbs, or croutons, or used in bread & butter pudding.
Daughter...? Discipline! get the whip out!
If she takes it she eats it. If she leaves it she doesn't get anything else until she HAS eaten it. You'll have a battle royal or two until she gets the idea that wasting food like that is simply not on. Alternatively... dock her pocket money by the cost of what she wasted (or at least threaten to, at the start)... She's not likely to learn the lesson until in some way or other it impacts on her personally.
