If you have a blender /processer you could turn it into breadcrumbs and then freeze it into useable portions. Use the breadcrumbs to coat chicken, on top of a fish pie/ crumble. You could make stuffing....

    Hi susyrosy,

I'd make breadcrumbs for the freezer but this thread has lots more ideas: Stale Bread - what to do with it?

I'll add your thread to it once you've had some more replies to keep the ideas together.

yeah and toast is better if its made with stale bread. also eggy bread too - stale bread absorbs moisture better than fresh.
oh and why not make some croutons? they last for ages in an air tight container and are lovely on salads! just cube the bread and deep fry until golden. I like to season them with salt and pepper then keep them in a tupperware container.
  • just resurrected this thread a a timely reminder for all us OSers out ther to save noggins of bread on the run up to xmas in a box in the fridge as it comes in handy to make the stuffing, it gets me every year that I never have any breadcrumbs at this time when I seem to have bread leftover all year round!

    Hello All!

Hope you can give me some ideas.......

OH & son run a cafe and quite often get leftover bread (in all its various forms) and they're running out of ideas of what to do with it! The baker kindly packages it in small quantities for them :j which they keep in the freezer, but they have to ensure enough is defrosted for potential customers and this can often result in a bit left. There's a limit to how long it'll keep once defrosted and a limit to how much I can use up at home!

What they've done so far is......

    breadcrumbs
    bread pudding
croutons all of which are well stocked up now!

Can you come up with other ways of 'recycling' it? They don't do hot puddings. (Or cold ones like Summer Pudding!).

    Ta!

Could they bag up the croutons, perhaps with some herby salt on them and sell them as either croutons or nibbles to be taken away as snacks? Have some on the counter as tasters to start with?

  • bruschetta? depends on the type of bread that's going off as you couldnt really pass off kingsmill style bread as that! I find if you toast stale bread in any fashion it still tastes the same as fresh, so you could do it with fry ups and on the side with a soup no problem. Also breadcrumbs go great in a nut roast
