I was going to suggest eggy bread too and stale bread fries up better than fresh if they do brekkys.
my other suggestion would be pigs in blankets - you just cut the crusts of the bread and roll it out thin - add a flavouring (stuffing, strip of bacon, some fried onions etc) then a sausage (thin chipolata works best) and roll up. brush with melted butter or oil and put in medium oven until its nice and golden and the sausage is cooked. great for a little takeout snack!

Like the sound of the pigs in blankets as a take out snack, and having followed Links through the Hugh Fernley-eatitall's I've discovered Portugese Bread Soup! Now that sounds yummy!

    Thank you all!

  • What should I do with stale ends of home made bread? I know about bread and butter pudding and breadcrumbs but anything else? Also should you cut the crusts off for B&B pudding and if so would you use them for crumbs?
I am sure all you OSers will have loads of ideas.

Personally I scoff them first as I think they are the best bit!

But if there is any stale bread lurking around (and not enough to make a B&B pudding) I whizz it in the blender to make breadcrumbs and add it to the ever increasing bag of breadcrumbs in the freezer - always useful to have at the ready and you can measure and use them straight from the bag.

PS You can make a very lovely treacle tart with breadcrumbs *slurps* - something like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/treacletart_67656

I whizz them up in the processor with a pinch of salt and a pinch of chilli powder. This is lovely cooked on top of a nice piece of fish or chicken breast.

You can freeze it like that and just break a bit off as you need it.

I also like it fried with a touch of butter or olive oil, fry until crisp. Add to a salad like you would croutons.
