you might find some stuff here of help http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/food.html just remember no tomatoes, spuds, chocolate, sweetcorn, peppers, etc. they all came from the Americas. Soup, stew (with barley and beans instead of spuds) porridge (with dried fruits and cinamon added if you like), bread and cheese are fine though.

  • Hi there, we used to do a lot of this. First of all you'll be cooking over an open wood fire but do you know what you will have to cook in?
If you have acess to an iron pot and a griddle then you are able to cook loads of different things. Just remember no potatoes and tomatoes. Breakfast - porridge, Lunch cold meat cheese aand rustic bread and for dinner think of rabbit, venison, or chicken either roat over the fir or as a thick stew and remember the water was dangerous so it's beer for breakfast. Have fun.

The Boke of Gode Cookery is very good, I've used it myself several times.
  • Hi, second attempt at posting - the Gods are not happy tonight. Anyway I used to do battle re-enactment for about 20 years and got used to living history camping. As a previous poster has said be careful on what not to take. If you need to take a cool box try to disguise it - we used a wooden chest. Decant beer into tankards, use wooden plates and no forks only a small sharp knife to eat. Rustic bread, rough hewn cheese, onions, stews and though it would have been rare at the time a chicken goes down well, tearing off the meat and throwing the bones on the fire. Porridge for breakfast frugal and authentic, salt and spices in small pots or jars. We used to have a camping kit just for shows - and nothing beats sitting round a real wood campfire. Have fun

  • Cheers for all your great ideas.

Yes, Lightisfading, it's a larp event that we're going to, so I presume I can get away with a few not-quite-authentic recipes for that wee bit of luxury - but nothing too out of place!

I've got some bread rolls on the go at the moment, and I'm going to make a pie as well. Also picked up some whoopsied (YAY!) ham and the like. Got my porridge all set as well.

  • I found an ad in Amazon.co.uk for Thermos stainless steel shuttle chef, which is probably what you're looking for. I've sent a separate message to you with more details.

there are now packs of self heating food available , dead easy and quick ! Gets really hot too, better than i expected. I got some a while back, cant remember where from now. Everything is in a box, just open it, press a 'button', and you're done. Probably not good enough for when you have access to shops or stoves etc, but great for field camping and when you dont want to lug stoves around.. just cant remember where i got them from.

EDIT: here yo go.. not sure i got it from here or not though.. camping food .
I think most outdoor shops sell something similar.
