I have 'talked' a few mum's from play group into taking the children away camping for 2 nights for a cheap break ,i say camping it is going to be a mixture of 2 caravan's(with electric) and 2 tents (no elec)

found the campsite ,cheap as chips with a lovely play area, but quite remote so everything will have to be taken with us and costed out prior.

Now I need some advice on some cheap cheerfull and not much cooking food to feed 12 pre school and 5 adults , we have 2 caravan cookers ,2 microwaves, a gas bbq 2 microwaves and 1 small slow cooker

I need ideas for 3 breakfast,2 lunch,2 evening meal and snacks

silly question but can I warm hot dogs in slow cooker or will they split and go mushy?

would be soo gratefull for any reply's my mind has become blank

  • when we camp the favourite brekky is eggy bread & bacon (or sausage) - I've only got a 2 burner & a small grill, & the bbq for the evenings but i manage to feed the 4 of us

just beat 1 egg & soak 1 side of bread then turn over & soak the other then cook in a little oil in frying pan - cheap as chips!

Can't see a problem with warming the hot dogs in the slow cooker. On stalls, they are kept warm in liquid.

If its tinned hotdogs, I always heat them in a microwave. If the slowcooker doesn't work, try that?

Breakfasts: Cereals,Eggy bread, Beans, Bread & Butter.
Lunches: Sandwiches (prepare & wrap at breakfast time then go off & enjoy the time with the kids), Hot Dogs (microwave).
Evening meals: Pasta with tomato or bolognaise sauce, Sausage & Mash,Corned Beef Hash.
Puddings: Toast marshmallows over T lights then squash between 2 chocolate digestives.Instant Whip,Let the kids decorate biscuits with icing, sprinkles, sweets etc. Homemade cakes.
Have plenty of fruit, bread & jam, biscuits etc available during the day as fresh air and running around makes kids very hungry!
If all this doesnt seem very healthy its only for a couple of days and they will be having fresh air and excercise!

Jacket potatoes are handy for evening meals - can be wrapped in foil when cooked to keep them warm.

Depending how far you have to travel (to keep things cool) - you could pre-prepare that evening's meal. For instance, a cottage pie or the bolognaise so all you have to do is prepare the pasta.

For breakfast it has to be porridge - you can do it all in one pot. Trying to do fried egg sandwiches/cooked breakfasts for a large number of people can be quite stressful when you only have limited cooking facilities. You can add some jam/honey etc.
