Just found this thread but as I'm due back at work, I'll read it all tonight.

I just wanted to say thanks to all for what looks like a little ray of light in my very long, dark tunnel of despair.

Just read back some of my posts on this thread and can I just say "what happens on site, stays on site" :D

So have I  . And what's all this about you eating in the caravan?? If I remember correctly, you, (and a certain Mrs. Snape), used to get a lot of sustenance out of a bottle :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

My major regret is not seeing Margaret "exposing" her chest after the end of season bonfire :o . Bet you'd forgot about that one :D

As for the Great Escape, I've still got the passport that we made AND I can still remember the words to the alternate version of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive. That seems quite ironic given my present circumstances

  • Hey,

Thought I'd bump this, cos I'd hunted it out in preparation for our first camping (tent) break of the year.

Its only our second (although I caravaned with M&D when I was younger)

    From last time we learned:

Take more gas canisters than you think
Arrive with at least 90 minutes of light left  (i backed the car up and shone full beams on us, fortunately we were at the extreme of the site, overlooking a field)
A cooked chicken and sourdough bread make a wonderful meal sat on the floor, in the dark (we'd forgotten we'd need light ) washed down with hoarded Birthday Cava
Stale sourdough makes great fried bread
Disposable BBQs can be balanced on any handy rock. Or indeed, on the "spider" i keep in the boot for loosening the wheelnuts...
A winebox heals many camping rifts
Derbyshire is infested with midges, take wipes or roll on
The sachets of tea, coffee and sugar we collect all year from business trips can be stored in a small cream pot and take up less room than individual pots
You can cook a fry up for 2 in one pan. Boil the kettle for the brew first. Then start the sausages (one each for us) then when they're 2/3 done add the bacon, then once the bacon has been turned add the halves of tomato, bread and sliced mushrooms. Its a bit crowded, but it does work. (you may need a splash of oil)

On a slightly odder note, if you're going to a site with dubious facilities, have a good shower before you leave. You may find you can't bring yourself to use the site ones.

Any main meal suggestions welcome. We mainly BBQed cos it was the August BH and its tradition really. But this year we'll be doing it throughout the season, and without electric hookup.

    All the best,

    PGxx

We've used our clubcard vouchers to book a holiday at Haven in June :D and i'm trying to keep costs down so we'll have a lot of our meals in the caravan or picnics etc. I was wondering what sort of pans/tins/kitchen stuff you get in the caravans so I can plan our meals. We've got a 'prestige' caravan if that makes any difference.

I was thinking of taking my veggie knife (can't stand blunt knives!) and some plastic plates for the little'uns but that's as far as i've got :o Does anyone know what to expect? Or have any suggestions what we should take? There will be me OH, and the two DD's 3 and a half and 18 months. Thank you :D
  • im going to do the same with my vouchers poggie so i can't wait to see the replies :)

    Hi Poggie,

There's an earlier thread that should help so I'll add your post to it to keep all the suggestions together.

Hi we have been in Haven caravans before and they are quite well equiped. The only thing we find is that we have to take mugs as normally they only have the small cups for hot drinks. You might also find its best to buy some plastic cups for children as they normall just have glasses.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi

We have a tourer caravan and are due to go on holiday shortly (£120 for 10 nights, i'm very proud).

Thing is, we go away every weekend and am sick to the back teeth of eating shop bought lasagne or pizza...grrrr

We have 4 gas rings, and a tempremental oven with one shelf (by tempremental I mean it only seems to have one setting - very high lol!).

Any ideas of something quick, easy, nutritious to make whilst we are away as eating out every night defeats the point of a cheap holiday.

There is three of us (2 adults, 1 three year old)

Wholemeal pasta and egg. Cook the pasta then toss it in a pan with oil and egg so that the egg (one per person) cook evenly all through the pasta.

You can add salt and parmesan, and even a bit of black pepper. I find it very easy and satisfying as a quick meal. An average portion, on the generous side, should give you about 15 grams of top quality protein as egg end wholegrain band together to provide this, plus all the fibre in the pasta, and minerals and B vitamins from both pasta and eggs. A tablespoon of parmesan contains about 100 milligrams calcium and 4 grams protein, thus boosting the nutritious value.

There are other dishes of course, such as omelettes, or steaks, that can be cooked quickly, and nutritious greens such as spinach also cook in no time and add hefty amounts of beta carotene (vitamin A precursor), mineral, some vitamins C and B.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
