I live in Devon and Branscombe is not far from me. I just think it is awful and would never dream of going to the beach to rumage through peoples stuff. To watch people on the news made me feel ill and it just shows how pathetic some people are in the country.
I know what was being carried on this boat as I work for a certain "emergency service" and believe me, this boat is carrying "hazardous material"
It is going to take ages to clear up this mess and it will effect not only this beach but the surrounding ones for a long time to come...and don't get me started on the wildlife!!

it is burglary and theft regardless of laws that are 200 years old.

Maybe it's about time this law is changed. We are in a different age now where owners can be traced quite easily through modern technology.

Also by ripping the containers open and scattering stuff all over the beach it's made the clean-up operation even more difficult than it was before.

Seeing how these appalling people have been behaving has made me ashamed to be human, never mind just British!

It may well be that the Swedes are no longer the legal owners of the items.
I should think the moment they fell off the ship they became the subject of an insurance claim. As such the insurance company may well now be the owners, the Swedes getting a sum of money.

That's assuming that the good were insured.

Maybe I'm just being oversensitive. Apologies  I hate to see any animals in pain and distress. It's also a disaster for the locals around here and the economy. The walking here is stunning and it's a real shame. It's just horrible to see the pictures of the coast and it's horrible for anyone who loves visiting this area with their families. I certainly don't blame people for scavenging for goods - if it's locals doing it then all power to them. i hope they get enough to cover their losses. I'm not sure of the legal stance but they may not be able to get compensation for their wage losses as it's as a direct result of the storms that this is happening.

You are not being in the least over sensitive at all. You are just looking at the whole picture and consequences, the animal suffering, environmental and local economy effect. I like a "freebie" as much as the next person. You were just pointing out the indirect cost of this freebie. Dont apologise for having a conscience.

I am sure the people who have salvaged the BMW motor bikes will encounter problems when they either try to register the bikes or have them serviced as BMW are bound to be able to track these bikes serial numbers on behalf of the rightfull owners of the bikes.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here last year , and we are saddened to see the selfish destruction that has accompanied the looting of these washed up containers. Pictures of the fires being lit by thieves on the beach and the rubbish (which are someone elses discarded possesions due to their low value to the looters) in such a beautiful part of the world that holds special memories for us , is heartbreaking to see. We all love a bargain and a freebie but not at the expense of wildlife , nature and peoples livelyhoods! The environmental damage will last for years not months .
I wish all who live there my hearfelt best wishes for now and the future.

  • I don't agree with it really, TBH. Especially considering the fact that some poor family has had a lot of their worldly possesions taken :(
