I do live here and I'm not interested in getting Free stuff. Our beautiful coast is covered in oil and there are lots of birds dying. Not to mention the damage to the sea and the economy for tourism. Some of the containers with dangerous chemicals have come off the ship. Not all of them can be accounted for. if they sink and stay in the sea then they are posing a permanent potential danger as they will not be moved - just left in the sea. Anyone on holiday here this year? ....... no probably not. Who wants their kids swimming in potentially dangerous water?

Can everyone please stop talking about it like it's a great thing and they wish they were here. Our beautiful World Heritage area is being destroyed before our eyes. It's the only world heritage site in England and it's heartbreaking.

If anything, the 'freebies' should be given to the locals to sell to cover the money they will lose from their usual livelihoods.
I live in Devon too, Branscombe is one of my favourite beaches, this is so sad

heard on the news earlier that theyve got loads of police down there to stop the looters................. what a shame! :(
Police are handing out forms for people to complete and return to the Receiver of Wrecks. They most certainly are not arresting anyone, as no offence is being committed, nor are they stopping anyone from taking items.

I'd rather it go to the Branscombe locals who will suffer more as a result of this. I don't live in Branscombe - I live in Devon, but am a keen walker and do coastal walks most weekends. I just hate to see what this is doing to a stunning part of the world.
  • Its not looting its salvage. I once found a boat drifting in the firth of fourth. Received £700 from the insurance coumpany. Saying that it was a £50k+ boat. Wish I could have hid that in my garage!!

i think that its only illegal if the companies that the stuff belongs to, start asking for it back! but to be honest, will these big companies who make these items really want to cause a whole lot of hassle when their insurance company will prob pay out any way.

some of those containers might also contain peoples personal effects/belongings that they were having shipped abroad....
  • I live about 10 miles away from Sidmouth beach... Im in no rush to go and grab thing off the beach...I do feel very badly for the wildlife this is effecting.. I doubt those who have taken things will give any money to help the charities who are helping the wildlife.

The wreckage is now spreading further afield and so I fear is the oil and diesel that was on board along with the fertalizer and other hazzardus stuff the ship was carrying.

Would you really want to go all that way to get some nappies that may have been coated in who knows what... the cars that are washed up are totally unusable and if there were any wii's on board and are now on the beach they too would be pretty useless to anyone. Water damage is bad enough but salt water!!

I feel this will have a terrible effect on tourism, in the last few years we have also had foot and mouth to contend with. This had a devistating effect on the local economy. A lot of the small restaurants and cafe are known for there fantastic seafood meals, of which the sea food is locally caught... so this boat has now affected their trade.
  • I agree that animals suffering is not nice and damage to the site, but as for damage to the local economy?? If anything it will have a boost, or am I just looking at it the wrong way?
