Sorry, you are just plain wrong. The guide you linked to, the first two pictures (bar the boot from CD) are the normal, "what everyone sees", retail or OEM Vista installation, either from disc or not. Nothing "recovery specific" about it. It's what you choose on the second screen that matters. The guide itself isn't even called "recovery environment" instead it talks about the repair options, opitons found using the standard, Vista installer, not some sort of "God Mode" recovery environment. Startup Repair is just an option chosen instead of upgrade or clean install, nothing more.

Only after you choose to "repair" does it enter the recovery environment.

I've already "added" that I want to know what happens when booting from Safe Mode. Something that should have been asked ages ago.

    You have changed your description from L O A D to I N S T A L L A T I O N.

In order to begin an I N S T A L L A T I O N from boot, you need something from which to boot. That was already covered in post #2.
The OP indicated that SFC could not repair some corrupted files, so the idea is to replace them from a clean Recovery Disc.
The OP has not yet completed this task.

So let us read your idea for a solution. "Wanting to know what happens when Booting from Safe Mode" is not a solution.

So if you have a problem with my method, perhaps you can post yours.

I'm going to assume you've actually tried to follow your instructions in post 2? If you had, you'd know that perhaps the reason the OP has not tried it yet, is because the link is dead. This is my problem with your method. Perhaps check your links before posting.

Until he has a Vista disk, we can cover off many other potential casues by knowing if he can boot to safe mode. Once there, we can help further. Until then, my post is as useful as yours.

FYI, most people class "loading and installing" as the same. I load vista onto a drive or I install it to a drive. The alternative is to boot (as per the Ops title). :)

Just checked the link and it's fine. I'm beginning to think that there is something wrong with you.

Since the OP can boot into Normal Mode, what do you hope to find by him booting into Safe Mode?

If anything, I would suggest a Clean Boot. But since we haven't carried the initial, very simple solution, we have to wait.

Sorry, but I think that you are just a time-waster, trying to bolster your very poor argument.

fair enough, but when I try your link to the Vista Recovery Disk Image (http://www.mediafire.com/?nqwfzmzzjnk). I get a page not found error.

I want to see if it will boot to safemode first time around (without CTRL/ALT/DEL)

I'm in agreement though, if that doesn't work, he should use a Vista disk to choose a repair and that will probably fix most / all issues. Failing that, a clean install. However, he'll need a Vista disk or his recovery disks for that.

So it's seems that you have a problem with your PC. Try changing your DNS Server.

So if he can boot into Safe Mode, then what???

Sorry, but you have just added a load of confusion in to this thread, for no good reason.

You should have at least waited to see the result after using the Recovery Disc.

Just changed DNS, still not working. Sky have been having issues today it seems.

All i'd be looking at after booting into safe mode was the bootlog to see what was causing the freeze, nothing more than that. That is even easier than using the recovery CD :)

Also, technically, that recovery image should be "paid for" now if we want to keep legal :)

Again, you are posting beyond your scope of knowledge. Read about the Recovery Disc

That's fine, when the OP reappears, hopefully he will forego my solution, so that he can run through your solution.
As you suggest that it is easier, we will see.

So, write a guide for the OP. How to retrieve the Bootlog for you so that you can diagnose and guide him to fix the problem.

Not really am I? From that very article:
It is a 120 MiB download, and in the standard ISO format. Please note that this download is no longer free, due to licensing restrictions imposed upon us.

but please, continue to correct me. I can assure you, my scope of knowledge in IT would probably make yours look like a year 7 "power on your PC" lesson. I'm all for the simple "easy fix recovery" disks, but I always prefer people to know why and how it might have happened and what can be done to avoid / fix in future.

That download may not be free, but mine is.

I am happy for you to write a guide for the OP. But you seem more happy to argue than to do so.
    So let's stop the chit-chat.
I have compiled a very simple guide for the OP, but as you write that you "always prefer people to know why and how it might have happened and what can be done to avoid / fix in future" then I am happy to clear the decks for you.

I can remove my guide and you can write yours for the OP.

You say that it is easier and I and I'm sure many others would like to see you in action.

    Please, be my guest.

Are you intimating that you are linking to software for free that Microsoft explicitly want licenced??
