Re-run as per these instructions Though I still think a boot disc is best. Perhaps the Kaspersky Rescue Disc.

If we have eliminated malware as a cause, you can look at where the issue begins. Cold Boot Timeline Switch the PC off via the Power Button.
  • I haven't previously mentioned the whine. When my PC is running normally no whine is in evidence - just when it has closed down for a few seconds. I'll certainly hesitate to take my PC apart (undoing the screws at the back etc) so will have a go at T.T.s suggestion first - even if I have suspected, for a while, that it may be hardware problem

I read the computer hope page - and switched my pc off with the power button. When I switched in on again - same problem would not boot without C+A+D.
I suspect I'm going to have to have a go at taking the back off.
I think I should be able to spot the hard drive and, hopefully, will be able to unpug its power connector - when I get round to attempting this. It involves undoing several screws and cables and carefully lifting the housing upwards. Looks quite tricky - I don't think I can take the side off.
At the risk of appearing to wimp out - if anyone has any other suggestions I may try those first.
(years ago I recall taking my old emachine apart - I suppose it will be similar to that)
    Cheers

    Clean boot

    =================

    1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter.

Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.

    2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).

    3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".

    4) Please ensure that NLA is not disabled.

    Then re-start.
  • Done up to the Disable All bit. I can't see anything that looks like NLA (disabled or not disabled)
    Network Level Authentication?

    Yes. That's right.
  • What are other terms for Network Level Authentication as there is nothing called that in either services or start up.
This is now a bit scary as some items are showing as "Stopped" and some as "running" - perhaps that's normal

Don't worry about that for now. Try a 'cold boot' with those services disabled.
  • I don't want to labour the point but I can forget about Network Level Authentication then - or anything else that NLA could be called?

From Control Panel, double-click on the System icon.
Click on the Tasks > Remote settings link.
    Click on the Remote tab.
Select "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)".
Click OK and close out of this window.
