from cold I still have to hit ctrl alt delete - which is why this thread started. It's not even that big a problem as I've more or less learned to live with it. But, I suppose, it's best to get it sorted

That's OK not covered previously. I've no idea what motherboard. I just googled this and indications are that I have to download (free) software to find out

what make is the PC? You can use CPUID to tell you the motherboard manufacturer / make

That's unlikely to give any results given he's used the recovery discs (unless the kit was on before recovery was taken).

I'm leaning towards a cold boot issue, which is almost as bad to diagnose or fix.

That looks promising. I don't have a Windows Vista DVD but I have been advised that I can download one. I have created 2 Recovery DVDs which (almost) take my pc back to factory settings

You can boot into vista so you don't need to use DVD. Run EasyBCD from your normal Vista and follow Type 3 instructions.
