If you are going to update the BIOS, you could....you'll have to wait until I come back. Out for dinner.
  • OK bonne appetit! After a full restore (and scores of updates) is it likely that changing the BIOS will solve the boot up problem?

No. Not really. Unless as TT says, it's a BIOS infection, which:

    A) is ridiculously rare
    B) would be causing all kinds of issues.

The a BIOS update is normally just that, to unlock, tweak or release new features.
  • Does a full restore back to factory settings have any effect on the BIOS - does it return to factory settings along with everything on the hard drive?

No. The only time that happens is:
    • BIOS Update
    • Resetting the CMOS (jumper setting or remove the battery)

Not that rare, though AFAIK mainly affected AWARD BIOS.
  • I could ...?
To be honest it seems unlikely that the BIOS is interfering with the IE9 download as I have not altered the BIOS since purchasing my pc over 3 years ago - and the download failure coincides with alerts from McAfee. I only have McAfee at the moment as, each time I restore, it's available free for 30 (or is it 60?) days.
I usually use AVG Free but, when I tried to reinstall, it advised that it's only good for general surfing - not banking and purchasing. Who uses their pc without banking and purchasing? So I downloaded Avast (for now).
I don't think I'll touch the BIOS for now - but I need to find out what's causing the PC boot up nonsense. Should I really alter the BIOS to check if it's the cause or could it be a hardware problem?

  • OK - I uninstalled McAfee and the download installed immediately
  • When I hit restart my pc reboots without a hitch
