Vista not booting

Having said that I was looking at Type 20

No - 'fraid Type 2 didn't work. When I pressed 'Perform Action' it seemed to make an attempt that lasted about one second0

Have you run a Rootkit scan on the HDD? Have you cleaned the RAM contacts?
You have the option of formatting the disc and installing a clean copy of Vista. Perhaps it's a false positive, but if Avast is reporting a Trojan...0 -
Haven't done a Rootkit scan. Is the Sophos rootkit OK? I've never even heard of cleaning RAM contacts but will bear it in mind.
It was McAfee reporting a problem. I uninstalled McAfee and Internet Explorer 9 was then installed successfully (McAfee had been blocking it and reporting a problem).
I think the recovery discs which I used on the weekend would've eliminated any virus or trojan problems as my pc was taken right back to factory settings. Could it be a hardware problem?0 -

I was going to recommend a Boot Disc, but... knowing the trouble you have with them...
Hang on....Vista you say.... How about this?0 -
That's a different (but similar) sounding issue. To explain - with many windows applications it's necessary to press ctrl alt delete to log in once your pc has booted up - then you login. I have to press ctrl alt delete to persuade my pc to boot up.0

So, can we summarise?
If you hit restart, it restarts fine?
If you turn on from off, it required a C,A+D to work
The latter, does that happen if the PC has been no for a while and you shut it down then turn it straight back on?0 -
In order to ensure an accurate response to that I did a little test. If I switch back on while there is still what whiney noise (technical term of course) it will reboot OK. As soon as the whiney noise stops I have to C,A + D to get it to boot0

I did a Sophos Rootkit Scan. It detected 14 unknown hidden temporary internet files. All Removable but clean up not recommended. However - Sophos recommends that I do not remove them.0

Ok, I'm pretty sure I know what the issue is now. This whine noise, have you mentioned it before? Sorry if you have, but I can't remember. Either way, the issue is not software. I never thought it was really, and looking at your boot log would have told me this days ago.
How happy are you to take the side off your PC and unplug the hard drive. What I want to know is, does the PC make the noise with the hard drive unplugged. I don't think your drive is failing, I still think it's a cold boot issue. This test will help me know.
