I stayed at the Liverpool Travelodge - it was the only room left in town, since it was Grand National weekend (great time to be called up on business).

My room stank, the bathroom hadn't been cleaned and smelt of urine, the bed had broken springs, and the carpet was so bad I wouldn't take my shoes off. I asked to be switched, but it was the last room, so I demanded that a cleaner be sent up to deal with the bathroom and hoover the place. They did send some one who cleaned it up to a decent level, and even put an air-freshner in and gave me extra pillows so I wouldn't roll onto the dodgy bed springs.

I will never stay in one of those hell holes again. Life is too short to stay in such lousy hotels.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

  • Myself and a friend stayed in the above as part of a short biking holiday. We also booked into the Yeovil Travelodge. Chalk and cheese (CAnt recommend Yeovil enough)! This is a copy of the email to Customer Services about Stoney Cross.

Sir/Madam, I have just returned from a three day bike holiday with a friend, where we have stayed at two of you hotels. On Monday afternoon we booked into the Stoney Cross Travel Lodge. I have to say, that this was probably the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. When we arrived (about 1600) the outside of the hotel was shabby, with overflowing bins, rubbish and cigarette ends every where. We booked in with a member of staff who was at best, unhelpful. One of the first things we were told was that the deliveries were late, there were no towels in the rooms and little toilet roll but he would replace as soon as they were delivered. We had arranged breakfast and asked for it to be brought to the room at 0830. As I went to my room, 110 i was dismayed to see electric plugs hanging off the wall, smashed roof tiles, plaster out of the walls and dirty marks all over them. When I got into my room i saw that i had about a quarter of a roll of toilet paper and only one towel. The draught excluder on the bottom of the door was damaged and later on that night i actually cut my foot on it. When we got back to our rooms after diner, i took a shower, only to find the tiles full of mould! The electric towel rail was fixed to the wall with a broken fixing and had been disconected. When i went to bed and pulled my curtains closed i actually found that the curtain track had been broken and fixed with string!!! Now, on your website it does state that 'owing to its location some traffic noise may be heard'. This is very untrue. A lot of traffic noise will be heard. My room was not more than 10 feet from the side of a major dual carriageway. I was unable to have my windows open because of the noise, so this made the room very hot, but even this did not stop the noise. But just to make matters worse, when the traffic wasnt going past at 70mph, there was a generator running nearby. In the end, i took my motorcycle earplugs to wear, but even they couldn't drown the noise out. I had the worst nights sleep i have ever had, which was dangerous considering we were plaing on riding about 150 miles the next day on our bikes! My friend did not fare much better. His sheets had huge holes in them as did the curtains. At one point when he looked out of the window, the overflowing bins had attracted a large number of rats that were running about the back of the hotel. At 0830 our breakfast wasn't delivered. When we checked out at 0930 i asked the receptionist (who was very pleasant and helpful) why, and she stated that she couldnt read the writing of the night receptionist and didnt realise we wated it. She did however refund the money for the breakfasts. I did ask why the hotel was in such a state and she stated that it was due a major refurbishmet. If this is true then i believe that you should make this clear on your website, as well as being honest about the noise. Oh, and the toilet roll was never replaced! I have attached photos of all the issues that i have raised in this complaint. On the Tuesday night we booked into your Ilminster Travelodge. I have to say that this was one of the best hotels i have ever stayed in, and couldnt believe they were the same chain!. It was clean, tidy and looked welcoming , a real change from the previous night! I would welcome your views on what has been a thoroughly unpleasant experience in one of your hotels, and what you will do about this.

Up to today i have had no reply at all, despite constant emails and even phoning the hotel direct. They refunded the cost of one room, but I dont agree with this. I have even called their switchboard and have been promised a call back. No suprise that i havent received one! I know its only just over £40 but its now the principle, and why should they get away with treating customers in such an appaling shabby way when there are problems? I am going to take out a small claims against the company (when i get their details which they wont supply!) so does anyone have any advice please? I ahve sent a final email and letter by recorded delivery to them..

Wow, sounds like TL has gone downhill, though they do have a lot of hotels. We have stayed in dozens over the last few years, often on the £9 a night type deals. They have always been basic but clean. A few may have been a bit 'tired' in terms of age of furniture etc, but all have been clean.

We use Premier Inns a lot too - they are a bit more expensive but a bit more upmarket. It will a shame if TL don't get their act together as their Family Rooms can be great value.

Well, for the record I stayed in the Royal Scot Travelodge in London a few months back (it was mentioned early in this very old thread) and I had no real complaints, it was basic but for the price we paid it was better than I expected, it was clean and I had no hassles.

Well, except for coming back to the hotel at around 1AM and the front entrance being cordoned off by police, so we had to go up the fire escape to get to our room

Manchester Ancoats Travelodge is revolting too, so avoid. I can highly recommend the Premier Inn on Portland street though. Comparable pricing and its clean and comfortable with pleasant staff.

We have stayed in a few and they've always been basic but adequate prior to our complaint.

We complained immediately and was told they couldn't move our room as the hotel was full, and they just shrugged off our concerns about the fire doors. This was the Travelodge Kings Cross Royal Scot (there are two in Kings X).

This one is ok for London as it is near Euston and Kings X stations. We have booked there many times. Unfortunately the floor for the family rooms is not so good. The family rooms are overused and messy because many families have used them and not treated them very well. There are some nice rooms on other floors. In all the travelodges in London the problem is that they are the cheapest place to stay so people treat them badly/you can get some drunken idiots.

I've only had one where the room they wanted us to have wasn't made up is still dirty bed sheets etc from previous person -they could change sheets but not tidy up so we said no and they got us another lodge.

Mostly they are oK -but anywhere popular-gatwick/heathrow etc can be a bit tired and overused because people who stay there abuse them too much.

Okay, you should be contacting not just the manager of the hotel, but the branch manager as well. Go online and even look for the main office, this is really a horrible story, I can't even imagine.
  • I had to worst stay at this crap hole, booked online a double and breakfast and cot as my partner had only just come out of hospital with our new born son after difficult birth. When we got there the receptionist could not find any booking details on her system even tough i showed her a book ref no so we had to wait in canteen area on hard seats so stright away i was already !!!!ed off. when we did get a room there was not cot inside room so had to go back down to reception as there was no telephones in room asked where to cot was she could not give any answer, she did say woud get one brought up to the room, we went out for meal when we came back the cot was left out side of room so I did try and put the cot back together but it was broken so i chucked the broken cot out side the room and went back down stairs to tell the recptionist it was broken. plus needed more pillows so had to go back down stairs for 3rd time to complain and she came up and went to another room to get more pillows. the room was cold but could not be bothered to go back down stairs for a 4th time. in the morning we left and i asked for a refund on the breakfast as we had such a crap nights sleep did not want to wait for another bad experince but was told they would not give any refund as the breakfast was suitable, in there mind that my have been the case but fact was i did not want it so they should have refunded my breakfast infact they should have refunded for the room. i did send a complaint to travel lodge but they would not budge on my complaint. i will never stay in another travel lodge again. Badly managed hotel
