Don’t visit Philadelphia in a rain storm.

We did a few years ago on a fly drive holiday. We normally had no trouble finding a decent motel but that evening the rain was torrential and every motel and hotel was full. Eventually at about 1:30 we found a shabby motel with a vacancy sign.

“We don’t have a room now Sir but we will have one in about 15 minutes?” No prizes for guessing the nature of the occupants who were booked in.:D

After about 10 minutes or so we were shown to a room.

The sheets were still warm with a few damp patches and stray pubic hairs. The bedside cabinet was wet from hopefully just drink or glass spills. The toilet was filthy, with uncleaned faeces and pee.

We were very tired and could not face driving any more so we demanded clean bed linen and cleaning equipment and insisted that they clean the toilet. We changed the bedding, cleaned up the worst of the mess and went to sleep.

A very unpleasant night but fortunately untypical of motels in the US.

    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • I recently booked into the Plymouth City Centre one! Avoid at all costs.... it smells and wasnt clean. Try the Future Inn for the same price. Far superior. However, here are some useful phone numbers for Travel Lodge (previous posting submitted by someone else is a direct dial number for a manager who wasnt used to taking phone calls and was totally tongue tied).

Travel Lodge (head office) and main switchboard 01844 358 500

Travel Lodge (Credit Control) direct dial number 01844 358 732.

Please note credit control number is when a credit note for a refund has been raised and you still have not been refunded.

    Hope this helps....

I had a bad stay at Newport, Isle of Wight Travelodge. The staff were useless and overworked. I complained that evening online using my mobile internet. I tried to find a contact number but the only one I could find was the sales lines and they refused to deal with complaints.

In the end I got a cheesey "apology" letter from the manager of the Newport Travelodge. I said to them that they could donate the cost of my room stay to the NSPCC rather than refund me, something which would have been tax deductible for them, and engendered goodwill. But they refused so now Travelodge can stick it - I've never stayed with them since. Premier Inn as a bare minimum standard for me.

  • A working email address for them is customer.services@travelodge.co.uk if you need one.

I know what it's like to have an awful Travelodge room and completely sympathise, but regardless of the time etc I really don't see why you didn't just ask for a room change - when it's in the state you found it you're hardly being picky. For £15 you should expect some shortfalls but there is a limit, like when I found multicoloured feathers in the bedding of my £9 room. :p

I stayed at one near Shrewsbury (Battlefield??), and when I got in my room, there were newspapers on the floor.

How kind, i thought, as I hadn't had chance to catch up with the newspapers for a couple of days.

Then I noticed the sheets were crinkled.

EUGH, my room hadn't been cleaned at all!

I went straight back to reception, and they were very apologetic and gave me another room. No problems whatsoever.

If your room isn't up to scratch, just ask for another one, or ask for it to be cleaned!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

.... On arriving was told my room had been given to someone else. This is a room I had paid for remember! So I asked him if he could see my booking on his computer screen - he confirmed he could - so I asked again (politely) for the key to the room that I had booked then. He then said I should have telephoned earlier in the evening to confirm my late arrival - for a proper hotel, yes - for a Travelodge, no!

We've arrived late after confirming a late arrival in the evening and they've still given the room away. We were met with a new receptionist who'd no idea how to process refunds or find alternative hotels as the others in the area were fully booked.

Agree with the poster who said Premier Inn is the minimum standard to accept.

My mum and dad stayed in one a few months back. When i was talking to her recently about them going on another short trip i asked her why she was looking at expensive hotels and not just stay in a travel lodge to which she replied " i'm never staying in one again, not after what happened in the last one we stayed in" i asked what she meant and she said to me "you don't want to know.." so i didnt pursue... she said it in a way that i really didn't want to know!!!!
