Hi, hopefully writing the letter will get you at least a refund (oh and remember the TV lead :) ).

It is ALWAYS better to suffer a little embarrassment at the time of the situation then to have the stress and hassle of trying to get your money back later.

Here is what to do when you first notice the room, even if it's two in the morning and you're a group with two guys and two girls, three of whom are stoned drunk and the other who's partially sighted and only half sober. Take your photos (before any attempt is made to tidy up) including any disgusting, health or life threatening visages. Go to the staff's quarters, warden's office or whatever, and advise them that the room quality is unacceptable, and that you wish them to come and check it out as a witness and to confirm the standard of the room is well below acceptable standards. Ask for another room there and then, tell them you will not subject yourself or your companions to such degrading treatment at the hands of an apparently reputable establishment. If no rooms are available, ask them to find you alternative accomodation, after all you have paid them for somewhere to rest for the night so they should provide it.

In our case and if you are lucky, the establishment will cover the cost of a night's stay at the nearest hotel. Re-imbursement or whatever can be sorted out in the morning.

As I said, it may have caused embarrassment, a feeling of low self-worth of being a bother, but at the end of the day the whole thing was sorted out before we finally left, there were no hard feelings and I didn't have to worry and wait for refunds or make ever increasingly vocifirous complaints.
Know me for who I am, not for who I say I am.

Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
    Are thinking of you today.

Not many facilities, but, they are cheap and handy as a half way stop on a journey.

Best thing to do in future is to complain at the time and get a room change.

    Lin :)
We have stayed in a few and they've always been basic but adequate prior to our complaint.

We complained immediately and was told they couldn't move our room as the hotel was full, and they just shrugged off our concerns about the fire doors. This was the Travelodge Kings Cross Royal Scot (there are two in Kings X).

You do have a problem with any after the incident complaints as it sounds far too much like someone not having any problems and then just making things up to get out of paying. You would expect the vast majority of people to complain at the point of seeing the room not afterwards when they would have had the opportunity to soil the room themselves.

Complaints that dont require immediate attention (which being honest this doesnt) are much better done in writing than over the phone.

rosy, when did you stay in yours? We stayed at the Royal Scot after Christmas, room was basic but spotlessly clean and warm. (and I am a fusspot) Maybe they have cleaned up their act, or as I'm beginning to wonder, we were just lucky?

Maybe they cleaned up a bit! I'm glad you had a better experience. We stayed there December 9th 2006. I hope they had got the fire doors shut and not wedged open by the time you stayed there.

    Hi Rosy
Yes we stayed just after Christmas for the sales. I didn't notice fire doors, and I am a bit paranoid about these things, so hopefully fire brigade had been. I seem to think we were struggling to get all our things through (bought too much :D ) and needed cards to open doors.

It is a worry though, that you might end up with a filthy room and be at risk of death because of their incompetence. Management know the rules, there is NO excuse for this. I'm glad you took it further.
