Christening....which religion.....

What I can't get my head round is how, if she were to die tomorrow, my two year old daughter would be condemned to burn in hell for eternity just because she was never Christened. Any God who would bring down such horrors on my innocent little girl has to be pure evil, and I have no time for anybody who believes such depraved nonsense.
Sorry, but this is nonsense. No one has believed such things for a couple of centuries, if not more.
Remember who it was who said (modern translation): 'Allow the little children to come to me, and don't forbid them, for of such as them is the kingdom of heaven'. This was when his friends thought the children would be a nuisance to him. They weren't. He welcomed them in those words.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

You tell that to my great aunt, who did her absolute best to persuade my mum to Christen me and my brother. She said that my brother was "unshriven" and would go to hell. She also said that my mum needed to atone for the sin of getting pregnant with him in the first place (despite her being married - never got my head round that one).margaretclare wrote: »Sorry, but this is nonsense. And then there's my husband, who was given an emergency baptism shortly after birth because it was thought he might not survive. Another overbearing aunt said that he would not be allowed a burial in consecrated ground. I have no idea of the truth of this, but the old biddy certainly believed it.
Don't infant baptisms occur simply because the parents are worried that the baby might not make it into heaven? Otherwise, why not wait until the child is older and able to understand the consequences, as happens in many denominations?0 -

A couple of centuries?
The Catholic Church only abolished the concept of Limbo in 2006. I'm not really sure if a human has the power to shut down whole sections of the afterlife or if its pretty much an acknowledgement that the whole thing is just a human invention, but people believed in it until very recently.

You don't need to get your head round it. I'm pretty sure the Catholic Church abandoned Limbo decades ago...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Not nowadays. We went to a baptism the weekend before last, part of the normal morning service, and the emphasis was on welcoming the baby into the church community. It was a very joyful occasion, and although we were a long way from home and had never been to that church before, we still felt part of it, a wonderful feeling of solidarity.Don't infant baptisms occur simply because the parents are worried that the baby might not make it into heaven? The Baptists are probably the denomination you're thinking of, but even they have a 'welcoming' ceremony for babies, not a baptism as such. Of course it's possible to be baptised at any age. DH was in his 70th year when he chose to be baptised. Many people, however, think it's something nice to do, and the church will welcome the parents and child. I can't see what's wrong with that.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Well I see Ebayqueen got her own way in the end I am actualy quite disgusted with the fact that you have managed to get a post removed and as I said it was just another religion in my view, it just shows how mad religious types are and they wonder why people are simply not interested in it.
Frankly I feel this religious discussion is totally inappropriate for this forum and the post's on here just show what one sided views religious types have on the world there way or the highway, perhaps they should remember the world is a mixture of all types of people and sitting there on your soapbox is wrong on so many levels.0 -

What a bitter post - why so much anger directed at others just because they hold a different view to you? You are guilty of the same actions you are accusing those "religious types" of.
Live and let live - we are all different and providing we don't hurt each other (and the vast, vast majority of "believers" regardless of their religion are peaceful) then let it go.
As somone said earlier in the thread, we will only learn the truth when we have left this life.:hello:0 -
It is not anger it is simply to do with the fact that they insited on getting a post pulled that was just another religion.

What a pretentious comment! "the establishment you stand for" ? Because one has a faith and a religion does NOT mean one stands for the establishment nor even for the leaders of ones "faith"...which incidentally is NOT the same as 'religion'.
Who cares? they're both words for the same made up nonsense. Of course a christian or muslimj or whatever has to stand for the religion they represent, otherwise why bother at all?
btw I have also dreamt I could fly...but that is just what it was a dream! My faith , such as it is , is based on what I know, which is based on my power to reason.
What power to reason? Reason based on what evidence? How do you know? Just saying "because I know" isn't enough, it's the idiot's answer to everything.
Because I cannot 'prove' to your satisfaction the existence of God, no more proves his absence , than you not being able to 'prove' his absence means God exists .
This sentenmce doesn't make sense. I presume you mean to say that because I can't prove god doesn't exist that he must. This is a ridiculous argument, no one can prove that there aren't unicorns or pixies, or fairies or goblins or any number of gods such as thor, ra, etc, but we are all (well those of us who are considered sane) atheists when it comes to those, I just go one god further. If this is your only argument for the existence of god then you must believe in everything you can't prove, including the flying spaghetti monster! Good luck keeping up with the rules for every religion ever created!
On death only one of us is 'possibly' going to be able to say "I told you so!"...if it's not me...it certainly won't be you lol
If your life is so terrible that it's only the promise of an afterlife that keeps you going then that's a real shame, make the most of your life now.Started Comping 25th September 2013.

That's the problem with religion, you can pick and choose bits of the bible to fit whatever your particular bent is, be it good or evil. You say no one has believed this for ages, but who said it was ok to just stop believing this bit now? Its so clearly made up, I can't believe anybody actually bases their life on it, its ridiculous!Started Comping 25th September 2013.
