Good grief, some people are acting as if a christening is a sort of evil ceremony where the soul is promised to the dark side - do let's all get a grip.

Of course not, because there's no such thing as "dark side" except in human behaviour. Actual personification of evil is a Christian invention too (or at least something taken from other older religions, like much of Christianity).

That's like saying how many people support Manchester United without ever hearing of football?

Of course, and that is because both football and religion are human inventions.

Well yes, but just because religion is a human invention, doesn't mean it isn't real. Doesn't mean god isn't real, doesn't mean Jesus wasn't the son of god.
It doesn't mean religion is bad either. Nor does it mean it is good.

What I can't get my head round is how, if she were to die tomorrow, my two year old daughter would be condemned to burn in hell for eternity just because she was never Christened. Any God who would bring down such horrors on my innocent little girl has to be pure evil, and I have no time for anybody who believes such depraved nonsense.

    Which country is that?

I certainly don't believe that and would totally condemn any Christian who did. She is too young to have made any decision and as such God will welcome her with open arms.

Original sin - its already been brought up in this thread (I think it was by a Catholic). It is standard Church doctrine, isn't it?

So if the religion is man made but there is an underlying reality of a deity or three, why aren't people capable of discovering that without recourse to formalised Christianity telling them about it? And how do we know that any of the humanly invented religions are correct?

No it isn't standard church doctrine. Being christened or not makes absolutely no difference to your final destination.

As far as I'm aware this was a catholic idea and may still be but to me it is very cruel and totally wrong.
