I was leafing through one of my baking books as I'm planning a massive cook up tomorrow and I'm trying out a fruit cobbler in my slow cooker linked up to my Weza (generator) as I'm trying out various recipes in there for IF we have power cuts this winter.
I was wondering if we already have an emergency/powercut cooking thread or if it might be worth starting one later??
What do you think would it be worth having all those sort of links together?
I know we have varios threads re haybox cooking etc but are they all together and easy to find??

Boys are due home will pop back later

  • Hello everyone, got a couple of days to catch up on as hit my broadband limit on Saturday :( but it is the 1st time ever & I was expecting it to happen a lot earlier than it did due to being home 24/7 for the past month or so.

Just a quick couple of mentions just now until I catch up properly:

Kidcat so sorry to hear about puss:( (((hugs))) to all as it's awful when we lose them.

V8moneybox sorry to hear your DF isn't well, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Re pneumonia jabs, I had one of these a couple of years ago at the same time as I had the flu jab at the GP. They just asked if I'd ever had one (nope) and banged one in. I'm middle-aged not elderly but have chronic illnesses which qualify me for the flu jab. Anyway, a few weeks ago at this year's flu clinic the nurse asked if I'd had the pneumonia jab and and when I said I had she told me you only ever need to have it once. Don't know if that is true but it'd be great if it was lifelong protection, wouldn't it?

I had a pneumonia jab a couple of years ago when I had the swine flu one (I have an autoimmune disease & take immune-suppresent drugs so my immune system's practically non-existant).

Unfortunately I had a massive allergic reaction to something in it - I was really unwell for over a week and it was nearly 3 weeks before the swelling / huge red rash on my arm disappeared, despite high doseages of antihistamines:eek:.

I've been told that I can't have it again but not to worry to much as the protection should last at least 10 years ...... I think if you're over a certain age, it is extremely unlikely you'll need more than one which is something to do with your body building a natural immunity.

nom nom nom - from Jamie Oliver. Fantastic for bonfire night or at any other time:

    Take one plain digestive.
    Top with one large marshmellow
Put in microwave for 10 seconds - it will swell in size.
Top with milk chocolage digestive (chocolate side down on top of marshmellow)
    Devour

    Its sticky but moreish. :EasterBun

    Delish!

NB do not attempt if you mind being messy.
If you dont want it - dont waste it - Freecycle it!
  • 1st November and the weather was lovely, so we went out for the day looking at autumn colours in the Wye Valley. Gorgeous and a real pick-me-up.
Called in the Labels shopping outlet, since we were passing and it seemed churlish not to. OMG the prices in there were horrendous. :eek:Maybe I should stop shopping at charity shops etc and get back into the real world......nah!
    Normal people worry me.

A great alternative is a Scout and Guide staple - if you have a campfire stick the marshmallows on sticks and hold over the flames until gooey in the middle and charring on the outside, then sandwich between the chocolate digestives. Known as smores - as in, so nice, you want s'more. Best ever camp food game - take one jaffa cake - tilt head back slightly, place jaffa cake chocolate side down on one eye. Now get to your mouth with a mixture of facial muscle exertion and careful head tilting - no hands. Adults are normally doing this for some time after kids have got bored and gone off to do something else! Best, I've found, before camp cocktails!

I am THE most minimalist person on the planet GQ. I would happily get rid of everything but the computer and my books. Oh and the cat.
    I cannot abide CLUTTER :D

Me too cant abide clutter,I cant bear books laying about either, and I wont have a bookcase cos they look so scruffy...........I dont like ornaments cos they too look untidy... yea I know what most of you are saying, but I cant help it, its the way I am, I was like this when the boys were small, they did have toys but they had to clear them up before running off to play with something different........

And now both boys are like me, there homes are immaculate too, everything have to be in its place, but I do like people to visit me and I never have the rule where people have to take their shoes off, and they can sit on the cushions, and drop biscuit crumbs too, I just cant handle a muddle..........

Weather been good again and got all the washing done ,on line, dried and ironed up........had some lovely chicken cuts for tea , with veg, and some fluffy mash.........no desert tonight, felt a wee bit lazy to cook something, I dont think we will starve though.........:D

I've decided I'm going to have to take my mog to the dreaded v-e-t to get his claws clipped: he keeps getting caught up on things and falling over, which would be funny if I wasn't worried he's going to really hurt himself soon. :( I hate to do it, even though I know it's for the best, because he gets so hysterical about being put in a carrying box, and stress can trigger more serious health problems for him. :(

Hey ho. I've got a nice OS dinner tonight - HG veg soup that I froze when I made too much around a month ago. :) I might be naughty and have a slice of cereal cake for afters - I don't usually have much of a sweet tooth but it tastes so much like the cake my DM used to make when I was a kid that I can't resist. :)

ETA (I knew there was something else) - can anyone suggest a reliable way of freezing HM quiche, please? I had a slice of defrosted quiche for lunch today and remembered too late that, when I freeze and defrost quiche, it always ends up with a rather grainy texture. :( Am I doing something wrong (I freeze slices of quiche as soon as it's cold, and defrost again in the fridge overnight), or does HM quiche just not freeze very well?

PIC - I'm sorry about your tooth - I hope the dentist visit sorts it all out.

kidcat - I'm really sorry about your cat - it's so sad when that has to happen.
Back after a very long break!
  • CCP - get the vet to show you how to do them yourself, will save money and cat stress levels!

one of ours gets on your lap and lies down as soon as you get the clippers out, and if i happen to file my nails he gets up to file his!!! (such a weird cat!)

CCP - have you tried a different box? we had cats growing up and one was phobic about vets and carry boxes, so much so that when he had an operation the vet used to have to send him home much earlier than planned as he cried the whole time. Boxes/cages he hated but the vet tried him in one of their wire cages and he was much better maybe because it was so open he could see everything going on. Whereas the cat we have just lost hated the cage and we had a holdall style black bag for her with limited visibility - I always assumed she felt that if she couldnt see out then no-one could see in either.

Well fridge freezer arrived today and is now sitting in my hallway waiting on engineer number one who will remove old one from unit. Then engineer number two will arrive to fit new FF, followed by guy number three to take away old FF. Which means in total five different visits including the initial repair - surely there has to be a more cost effective way of doing this - if I was working it would be a mjor pain to have to sit in for five days waiting.

Have made a start on Christmas shopping today as its Nov 1st, I am aiming to be finished by the end of the month so I dont have long. OH is still sick in bed which means he will now not go into work for any of this shift and will therefore lose one whole weeks pay!! DD still off college sick too - meaning that I am now caring for two sickies and then the other three kids single handed. Still havent got out to walk the dog yet.
But have managed to get both littlies to sit and complete all their homework - two pieces each and their reading done, everyone has been fed proper food and have managed to get washing done, so it seems I am achieving something at least.

Had a massively productive day...you know just little domestic things, but a lurch forwards.

Sorted out the bags I'm making and got about half way through the three I've already cut out. Light stopped play. OH and I are totally bemused as to where our daylight lamp magnifier lamp thingy has gone? We must track it down as I need it. Either that or I need a 150W+ equivalent low energy bulb! My mate is having an Xmas stall at one of the local schools Xmas do, and has invited me to share the space, so I can flog some of these shopping bags. I need to order some Handmade in Wales labels....

Painted the beam over the wood burner - for the third time - STILL don't like the colour...so back to the drawing board on that!

DS had a day off today, and he very helpfully lugged the remains of the woodchips we bought last year for the same purpose, into the chicken run and made a path to their door, helps to keep their tootsies dry and makes it easier for us to shut them in etc. While he was doing that I cleared some dead basil out of the greenhouse, and got all the boxes ready for our winter salad stuffs...He then dragged in some fresh potting compost so I'm ready to plant in there, whatever the weather in the next day or two.

I also cracked and placed an order with one of the Yankee candle suppliers, they had an offer that if you bought one of the bigger candles, they gave you quite a few (8 or 10) free samplers with them, so I ordered a few 50p glass sample candle holders and will used some of the freebies to make up little sets for Xmas pressies. I 'needed' one for my glass owl shade anyway, and I ordered another Xmas one as a treat for us, and a reduced plate and shade...:o It felt really very naughty!!!

Also managed to sort out some paperwork, long overdue, but still can't find my passport which was the object of the exercise! I had it last year when I was sorting out my friends Estate, so I was convinced it would be with her papers...but no!

Dinner and lunch for DS was various leftovers (good boy) and for dinner OH and I had a jacket spud (done in the convection micro) with cheese and beans...I bought a can of Aldi beans to try, I thought they were a bit oversweet to be honest? Back to Mr T then!

I'm amazed how much I can get done, when I'm not knackered to start with! I think the clocks going back really helped...and of course not having to get up at 6.30 to get DS to college...I really *love* his day off :D
